Hey sir,

I started out playing a bit more cg live. I was wondering if you think it's profitable playing 1/2 5/5 5/10 with 100bb+eff with a 5% no cap rake (preflop plots and $50 pots not raked) Sometimes they take a bit more, like pot is $70 they take a $5 chip, plus when you win a big pot I alw give $10 tip. Last week table got 4 handed, me and a nl100 friend, and two huge station. Against my friend we were not fighting back much, and we could clearly see we could get their stacks in a matter of time. But the total amout we raked was absurd, I'm think about 30% of my stack went to the house. Is that standard in europe?

5% is fine. but no cap sucks bigtime, esp playing deep. but its true, rake is insane in many casinos/card clubs. u just have to play soft tables and usually i like playing rly rly deeep. mistakes deep just cost the weak plrs most.

"sometimes they take a bit more" loooooooooooooool solid rules u got there in brasil. doesnt sound like a place i wanna play at

no, that is not standard in any casino i played so far europe and north america

Sorry if you had this question already, but there are so many questions it would take me a while to read through them all! If you did answer it, I can go back and look np.

Do you think coaching offers a much bigger advantage to someones game than just studying vids? In general this is.

Also do you think coaches that produce vids too hold some stuff back in videos?

Basically im thinking of finding a coach at some point because ive been stuck around the same limits for a while now and I really wana push push push through this barrier. I watch many videos and feel asif I have a good understanding of them, but still feel like im hitting a wall, grinding these limits for $$ is great, but i'd like to be able to grind higher limits for more $$.

Also, do you know/can you recommend anyone that does coaching for idk say 50nl players? There are so many ppl that coach micros/ssnl, for such a variation of prices it's hard to know who to go with. Maybe you have a former student or such that coaches uNL/SSNL? (ofc if u do but cant say there name here, it wud be gr8 if u msgd me)

Sorry if it turned into a ramble . Thanks in advanced.

as always, it depends.

some videos (galfond  ) can teach u more than 10 hours of private coaching.
some private coachings can teach u more than 10 videos.

overall, i think a mixture of all available sources is best. and dont underestimate sweat sessions with players on your level. e..g u can do sweats with e.g. vonki and u can do those for hours. interaction with plrs is always helpful.

also, coaching ppl on lower stakes will also increase your overall poker iq.

coaches for nl50: hm, what about: gerv, bierbaer or mbml?
or just ask anybody from the forums who beats nl100 and u like. there should be many options.

How much time do you think it will take you to reach the same stakes that you play now starting with that BR, playing NLHE? What would your plan look like? (would you actually start with PLO?)

very unrealistic scenario i must say sir :f_biggrin: if i lost all my moniez, i would get staking for any stakes.

well, first it took me ~ 12 months to be winning over decent sample on 100 and 200 and trying to shoot nl400. and around 12 more months to establish myself on 200-600. (i mean over true sample size)

since games are tougher today but u said i keep my knowledge .... hm .... but i dont have to study my ass of for uni like i had back then .... my guess would be same amount of time overall. so 12 months to reach midstakes and another 12 months to establish myself on midstakes.

and then maybe another 12 months to rly feel comfortable swinging around on 1k and 2k and rarely gambooool big (live) mtts and 25/50 or even 50/100 (live) staked

Thanks for answering.

With that 200$ would you build your BR by playing PLO or NLHE? And what BRM would you use?

I would build by playing NLHE FR or 9handed SNG. Easiest to put a lot of volume in imo. Brm depends what role poker plays. If i plan on becoming Pro, I would use very nitty BRM. If only for the lols or besides university, aggro BRM ftw (20 stacks FR and moving up and down a lot)

Even with my current knowledge I wouldnt start off by playing PLO.

Long story: "Why do I feel like I'm losing more than I should"?

A little about myself, 4yrs+ playing online. Started playing freerolls, and turned 3.15$ into 2k playing NL5. Moved up with BR. Read all materials I can find and re-read them. All was fine, until I reached NL50, my WR wasn't breaking even, other then rakeback I was going backwards.
This is when I decided to write my hands down that get it all in pre and see if I'm putting my money in behind too often. No, my reads were good enough to know when tofold KK pre flop. Why was I breaking even, or worse? I'm putting my money in good most of the time pre flop. AA is being outdrawn 23% overall, after 397 showdowns. KK is holding up well, KK vs A2-Aq, 190 showdowns, losing 33%, everything fine there. Random hands, not including an A or K or hands containing pairs, outdraw AA 17%, again, all is fine. If I'm putting my money in the best pre flop, must be post flop play.

In my Quest to find out what was happening and reviewing hands hrs a day. I noticed variance is a bitch. AA was being kicked by KK 14 out of the last 44, win the next 40 out of the next 44, always evened out in the long run. AA KK will play themselves. Flopping a set should do the same. But, here are what I've run into for the last 2yrs.
Set vs overpair, 96x, outdrawn 25x, being 91% fave, losing 25 of those is mind boggling, but not big sample. I know. This is how I've been running.
not only are overpairs outdrawing my sets to often, but fl and oesd are also.
90 times I shoved my set to be up vs TP+Fl draw, or just A hi with draw, regardless, I lost 47 out of 90 at cash tables and so far lost 6 out of 9 to flush draws at SnGs and lost 4 out of 11 OESDs. So 10 out of 20. In fact set got outdrawn by gutter 5 out 8 at the SnGs. I know the math will even out. BUT WHEN????

Well, after 2 M hands played in cash games, I only have 1.2 M tracked, lost a lot due pc crashes. But, in those 1.2M, I noticed sets were my biggest losing hand, win small, lose big type thing but still money makers. Set over sets, 69x, was losing end of that 43x. Str8 flush draws, hit 12 out 49. Hit 4 times and still lost. Let's not shove with 47-56% EV, when hitting 24%.

Cash games it was missed draws and sets that I noticed playing "too hard"?
Those will even out eventually but not looking promising yet!

SnGs, it's just stupid, 25c SnGs all was going well, just like my venture at cash tables. Once I lost my 1st 1K at cash, I withdrew my money and went back to NL5$, Math was normal and had a WR of 4bbs/100. BR is enuff to play NL10. HA!!! AA cracked by KK 44%, sets not holding up again. Math is off for some reason. I decided to go back to SnGs due to the nittyness of non american players LOL. My luck has followed me. It took me 341 tournies to boost my BR from 50$ to 100$. I can now play 1$ SnGs. With an ROI of 51 at the 25c tables and playing a lot of same type players, you'd think You can achieve a 20 ROI at least, mine fluctuates from 15 to1 back to 15 like a yo-yo. It took me 540 SnGs to earn same as I did at 25c SnGs in less games.

Again WHY. Why am I losing more at one level then the other, better players, sure some hands, but the majority are rec players or grinders that only play their hands not their opponents. In 483 tournies played at the 1$, 208 times I was knocked out holding the better hand. Not saying I never get lucky, we all do. If I'm ahead 42% of the time, am I shoving too weak? Doubt it. I think I'm a bit tight when shoving his last 10bbs. Ak losing to junk 60% of the time so far, small sample. Junk is beating QQ 47%. Blah blah!!!
Being knockedout 57 times when 71%+fave out of the 208 excessive? Normal?
Being sent packing 54 times out of those same 208 normal or what about when I'm 50-60% EV losing 95 too much or....

2 many bad beat stories out there and everybody knows when you grind, get used to the bad beats, but when you see players cry caling K7s from the BB from an EP shove for 4 extra BBs and have an ROI of 60 and mine is only 15, I wonder how do they have such a good ROI after 20K tounies and this is a guy who I knocked out 5 out 6 times so far, all with the better hand. If he can beat the bad players, why can't I?

I've said this for years now "I just want 1/8ths of the beginner's luck!"

Hey pavels, post wasn't for you, STFU and disappear will you.
Twice can answer anything. You however look like you think you know it all already before even playing 100k hands.

It would have been enough to post exactly that, without all that rambling atferwards.

some thoughts:

- You are clearly wasting your time counting the times u lost sets or won AA vs KK pre. If you do not belive in RNGs, then don't play poker. If you do, do not waste your time counting how often KK win pre vs Axs. Maths is here to help you (wow I really said that lol). It tells us you will rin 67 out of 100 in the longrun. End of the story

- I am not a psychologist, but I can suggest two things to you:
1) read "Fooled my Randomness" by Nicholas Taleb
2) ask somebody who could potentially give you a more professional answer. I suggest you ask that question and what you can do abou tit Mr Tendler here: +++Q&A with Jared Tendler!!+++

- Overall all of us (and I assume even math pros to some extend) are underestimating variance and cannot understand statistics. Ofc, we can calculate things and understand that "a 5bb winner can lose over 75k hands with x % likelihood etc.
However, dealing with losing over 75k hands on a limit you know (well, thats also problematic, cuz we are usually overestimating our skills) is tough. Its incredibly tough and everybody has to find his own ways imo. I try to find mine, you have to find yours.

- Even math pros know about variance and completely understand statistics. But still see patterns where there aren't any and hate losing.

FYP

Admit it. You're just rattling my cage right? _cool:

+1 on reading Fooled By Randomness. Really helped me get to grips with variance, although obviously it can't do everything for you

hey sir! hope you are doing fine!

ad 2) I can't remember the last time I went by train :f_biggrin: Has been a while and doesn't happen all that often. But so far, I always booked cheap and standard economy / 2nd class.

ad 1) I'm afraid I cannot answer this question now, but I can guarantee you this question will be answered one day. The problem is, answering it will take me a few days because there is so much to write about him. I dont want to give you a short answer because I rly want to give an entire answer to this one.
For now, I can only say he is by far the biggest - and in fact the only - real inspiration out of the whole Poker Community.
