lol thanks for the replies. i reinstalled avast! temporarily after running some updates to see if it will work out now and have had no problems for the last couple days. i will be looking into nod32 once i get some money together but i guess it aint that important anymore since if avast is working fine i don't see the need for much else. thanks again guys! and no need to argue ♦

This isn't true though.
I was watching Breaking Bad online and the site I was using was down as I got to episode 8.
So I went on VeeHD and found it when I pressed play it said "you need to install Code-C to run this video" SO I did thinking it was something like DivX and instead of a media player it installed all kinds of programs like Smileys on my MSN, Toolbars on my IE and stuff.
I uninstalled it all but my computer was running really slow, did a scan with Avast and it said nothing was wrong, I ran one with SpyBot and it found 11 viruses/threats and got rid of them.
Between they 2 of them they do a good job but just Avast on it's own is not completely safe.

Those aren't viruses, that is spyware. They don't really hurt your computer, they just slow it down, monitor what you do, steal your personal information... That kind of stuff. And Spybot is used for spyware, so I guess that's why it found them and Avast didn't. I used Spybot in combination with some free antivirus like AVG or Avast! for a long time and haven't had any problems. The money for these antivirus companies is not in selling antiviruses to individuals, but in offering security solutions to companies, so some of them give their products free to individuals. I guess they got tired of trying to protect their sofware from being cracked. 
I talk these things out with my friend who works in information security and he told me that these free antiviruses work equally good as some that you have to pay for, if not better. The best free thing, according to him, is Comodo atm. I have been using it since I formatted my HD two months ago and I am pleased. You can download it here: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php I don't work for them or anything, it's just that I had problems myself looking for this package, as I could only find free firewall using google. This package, however, contains firewall, antivirus, host-based intrusion detection system and sandboxing. The latter means that whenever it finds some application suspicious, it isolates it. Can get a bit annoying, as it mostly blocks harmless applications(or does it?), so you have to click some to get the application started, but other than that it's fine. When installing, it also asks you if you want to install GeekBuddy, a live support system, which you can safely cross out imo.
