There is most variance at the HU tourneys so i donno what hes talking about. You will not play successfully at levels you dont want to play ex. I used to play at the low stakes, but was losing all the time because i just didnt care if i won 5 cents. I now play the $7 sngs, and am absolutely crushing them. stick to it and youll find your niche too

So you are claiming that HUSNG has more variance than let's say 10000 players MTT? If no then more variance than 1000 players MTT? 180?

And yes, the argument could be made about variance in a 10000 man tourney, but how many places are getting $? in a heads up game you either win or lose, there is not a prize for finishing in 500th. At least you get something out of good play in MTT's if you end up going broke on a bad beat, and get a chance to freeroll once your in the money for large amounts of cash. I think it would be tough to try and make a living off strictly MTT's or HU tourneys. Your best option is just to find out what works best for you and stick with it. For me I find the least amount of variance at the $7 sngs at pokerstars, but this does not mean I am right, or my answer is better then yours. I know how much variance is involved in MTT's, but then why are there the same players cashing big cheques at the WSOP main event year after year? are they the luckiest guys in the room?

@variance, the thing in Poker is that in any variant there is the element of luck and that is variance. the variance is reduce by the edge you have other the rest of the field but never eliminated completely and over one hand the game is complete luck. So tournaments that have a huge field will have a lot of variance. most tournaments have about a 10% ITM field (sometimes a bit more sometimes a little as 5%, and even some winner takes all tournaments) however the bigger the field you have to go through to get ITM the more "luck" you will need, not counting that the point of entering the tournament is not merely to get ITM and just recouping your BI but to go as deep as possible. Also the faster the structure and the shallower the stacks, the higher variance as well. So for the WSOP the example the structure is very slow and the stacks are very deep giving a chance to take your time and maximise your edge... however the filed is still huge and you still need a lot of luck.

As for SNGs... you say $7... the buyin does not really matter. what matters mostly is the stack deepness and the blind structure. Of course if you feel you have an big edge on other players at that buyin level then you can minimise variance. But beware not to mistake low variance and running good.

Well my friend, you'll have to put that down to experience. The more you play the better understanding you'll have with regards to variance and whether you fluked a nice fat pot or won it with your amazing poker prowess!
