So my brother had his gmail account hacked two days ago. he got a message saying someone from argentina logged into his account! what safety measures do you take to prevent hacking? tnx!

Give every account a different password.
Every password needs a number, capital letter and more than 8 characters.
That will make hacking a lot more difficult for them.
Also is it a good idea to change a password every year or so.
Do you think it would be more beneficial to use a company like Squid Proxies ( I did some research and found them) but I've never used anything like that but all this hacking that's happening I'm wondering if I should maybe start.

A proxy would not solve the problem - it only hides your physical location from the sites that you are trying to connect to.
Most of the times such "hack attacks" are a result of a human mistake - basically signing up in a "bad" site with the same email and password. Alternatively, he might have installed some bad software on his computer that logs his access. Or maybe his password was very easy to guess....
Some other tips include:
- Use Gmail's two step verification - they also send you a text message everytime you try to log in from a new browser / machine.
- Use a separate email for poker rooms and different passwords for this email and the poker rooms.
- If possible, use a separate PC for poker only - don't browse / skype / play games on it.

That's a very important matter nowadays, when data leaks from a lot of websites happen again and again (e.g. recent iCloud and Dropbox leaks). Using different password is not enough to protect from this, so I recommend everyone to check out this website and enable Two Factor Authentication wherever possible.
