I worked with a guy from that part of the world — but Cambodia I think — and sometimes I would give him a ride home, and then continue on after I dropped him off. One night I was really tired, and he suggested I stay over. We were taxi drivers, and got off shift around 02:00.
The family was all sleeping when we went in and it was really dark in his apartment, but he showed me to a thin mat on the floor, and I went right to sleep. In the morning I woke up to the most wonderful smell of a sort of soup. It was mostly vegetables but there was some sort of flavour in the broth I couldn't place. It was heavenly. The funny part was that this was a one bedroom apartment, and my friend, his wife, his brother and his brother's wife all lived together with there kids. The kids were all less that 5 or 6, and were really amazing.
The closest thing I've ever found to that soup is called Phở and there are hundreds of restaurants around here that sell it. All of them different.
