Welcome to my NL5 to NL50 challenge !

Hey there ! I'm George, a 37-year-old Romanian living and working in sunny Spain. Already 37 ... time sure does fly !

Over the years, I've dabbled in a few forums, but none have captivated me like Pokerstrategy. I stumbled upon this website back in 2011, and since then, I've never left. Even during long breaks from playing poker, I've remained a loyal visitor to the Pokerstrategy forums, soaking up the stories shared by the English and Spanish communities.

Seeing others succeed or stumble in their poker journeys has always motivated me. Whenever I come across a new blog or read about a player's passion and ambition on the forums, it sparks something within me and draws me back to the game. And that's why I'm here again.

It's been about a year and a half since I last played poker, but I'm ready to dive back in and take on a new challenge. I can't wait to give it another shot and see where this fresh start takes me.

The goals of the blog are as follows:

- Result Updates: I believe in keeping it real, so I'll be sharing my results and progress. Expect charts, scorecards, and all that jazz. It'll be fun to track how things go and see where I can improve.

- Sharing Hands from time to time: I'll be posting those tricky hands that make you scratch your head, looking for your input and thoughts.

- Poker Theory Notes: I'm going to write down some observations, thoughts, and conclusions about my poker journey.

- Motivation. Like I was motivated and inspired over the years on this forum by sharing my successes and failures (hopefully not too many of those!), I want to inspire you and myself to become better players.

This time I will skip NL2 because I never had issues with this one and I will start the journey from NL5. The short term goal is to play 10k hands and see and analyze my game, the ultimate goal is to get to NL50 for that my bankroll has to reach 2500 €.

This is all for now, I will edit this post if i think i need to change or add something.

Let's do this !

Hey Sven, I didn't update at all here because got no feedback in 15 days :f_biggrin:

I live close to Huelva in Andalucia.

I had some money left on the GG account so I started there, but I feel the rake is kinda big here.

Hey guys ! It's time for an awaited update on my poker progress. In my previous blog post, I mentioned that I would share my journey once I reached 10,000 hands played. Well, I have achieved that milestone and even gone on to play an additional 10,000 hands in the rush and cash format.

Results:
In rush and cash games, my performance has been kinda bad, with results close to breakeven. However, I've got better results at regular tables, where I've managed to secure some profit. After factoring in the rake, my win rate stands at approximately 5 EV bb/100. I expected to do better than this but it is what it is and I'm to blame for the results.

Study Efforts:
I must admit that my study efforts have been limited thus far. Apart from a few hours dedicated to analyzing out-of-position 3bet scenarios, I haven't focused on studying. However, I recognize the importance of continuous improvement and plan to allocate more time to learning moving forward.

Future Plans:
Throughout the month of June, I have committed to exclusively playing at regular tables. This way I'm sure I can increase the Bankroll. At the end of the month, I will evaluate my progress and make some decisions regarding the next steps in my poker journey.

Additionally, I aim to study another spot, 3bet pots in position by the end of the month.

Conclusion:
Reaching 10,000 hands and progressing to an additional 10,000 hands in rush and cash games has been a fun experience. While my performance in rush and cash games has been almost break-even I will not play anymore this month, I have managed to achieve a decent win rate of nearly 5bb/100 hands at regular tables after accounting for the rake. I am well aware that there is a lot of room for improvement.

I will try to update more often from now on.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Also... graphs :f_drink:

As you all know the GG poker graph are a lie because they don't take out the rake, but here are the real stats :

Bankroll : 175 $ ( Profit + Rakeback + GGCare + Daily )

Hey CheckMate ! Thank you :f_drink: I keep an eye on your blog also.

Unfortunately after the last update I've hit one of the worst downswing I ever had.

And almost all the pots I lost was vs big whales. Doesn't matter if i have premium preflop, sets on the flop or made hands the villain always gets a better hand in the end.

I know is just variance and the answer for this is just to put enough volume...but I don't cope well when I hit a downswing :ayfkm:

I will make a full update at the end of the month and i will make a plan for July.

Hi AgapieGheorghe,

I just seen your blog here, I mostly follow the Your Poker Blogs thread from the forum page and also the hand discussions section, but I like what I read until now.

Good luck in your road to NL50. Also I would recommend to read and watch the Psychology section of this forum, mentally it helped me a lot in coping with downswings.

Bafta si noroc la mese :f_drink:

June has come to an end, so it's time for a quick update. Things went pretty well for the first 20 days, playing regular tables. I had a BB Ev of 5 in the first 10,000 hands, but right after that, I experienced a couple of days where I lost every pot. It was a series of coolers after coolers. Only yesterday, on the last day, I think I managed to break out of this downswing, and I hope the green line will start going up from now on.

As for the Fast & Fold tables, I was almost break even for the entire month. The game is quite different from regular tables.

Overall, I played a little over 30,000 hands, breaking even, but thanks to the Rakeback + GGCare + Daily I managed to make a small profit of $86. I will include a few graphs for each stake level soon.

I've been quite lazy when it comes to studying, and perhaps that's why the results haven't been extraordinary this month. However, I've realized the importance of setting clear study goals and allocating dedicated time for it. Therefore, next month, I will establish specific goals related to my study routine and the time I invest in it.

Fast tables

Normal tables

If only the rake wasn't so exorbitant in this poker room... I had considered switching to another poker room, but my choices are quite limited. Despite the high rake on GG Poker due to the traffic, the room surpasses my other options in many aspects. That's why I've made the decision to continue playing here for the next month as well.

However, I have been contemplating an alternative strategy. Given the high rake, perhaps I should focus on playing for rakeback and taking advantage of GG Care to boost my bankroll. Even with just a 1bb/100 win rate, the added rakeback can significantly enhance my overall earnings with sufficient volume.

I am still in the process of finalizing my plans for July.

Bankroll : 186 $ ( Profit + Rakeback + GGCare + Daily )

Playing poker, players often encounter ups and downs. Lately, I've been caught in a seemingly endless downswing that has affected my sessions over the past three days. Even premium hands like KK and AA couldn't save me from the frustration, leading me to reconsider playing altogether. I believe there are several factors contributing to this prolonged slump, including lack of rest and external pressures.

One big issue in my life is the lack of sufficient rest. With only five hours of sleep each night I feel that i'm never at 100%. The excessive heat here in Spain adds an extra challenge to my poker sessions.
Another factor that significantly affects me is my job, which requires me to work outdoors under temperatures ranging from 33 to 40 degrees Celsius every day. The physical demands of the job make it even more challenging. Unfortunately, this will be the reality for the next two months, and I don't anticipate any changes in sight.

Understanding the significant role my mindset plays, I'm committed to its improvement. It's not just about managing tilt during downswings but also adopting a positive and resilient attitude towards the game. To achieve this, I will try to include mindfulness and meditation techniques into my daily routine.

Setting goals and having rewards in sight can provide additional motivation during tough times. Currently, I'm striving to unlock the next VIP rank within four days, granting me access to the GG Poker wheel. This wheel offers a chance to win rakeback ranging from $6 to $30. The possibility of obtaining that $30 bonus excites me, providing a much-needed boost to my bankroll.

I'm working on finding ways to enhance my overall poker journey and make positive changes.. By prioritizing rest, addressing external factors, and enhancing my mindset, I'm taking some steps to overcome this downswing. At the end of the week, I will conduct a comprehensive database review, sharing some of the findings here on my blog.

Hey Agapie,
Just read through some of your posts.
First of all congrats on your very well structured approach to your challange!

Poker variance and the general mind game required to handle it are probably the main factor we don't see more successful poker pros out there.
Hope you can get through it. May get back on that topic some point later in time.

I mostly wanted to comment your 5h sleep schedule: If there is any chance you can improve to 7 hours+ per night, try to prioritize this first. Latest research is crystal clear on the topic - no person on earth functions with less than 7h of good sleep per night at 100%. People need 7 to 9 h, there are no exceptions.
One night of 5h or less already takes several nights to fully recover your reaction-, memory- and logical-abilities. If the foundation is not there, everything built on top (including GTO ranges ; ) will suffer.
I know, talking from experience. *sigh*
If you are interested in the topic, search for Matthew Walker - he is one of the leading sleep scientists from the US and has some interesting talks on the subject also available on youtube.

Good luck at the tables.

The lack of sleep is impacting your life in all areas, I had that problem for a long time, I was eager to play even though I was tired a lot. I would came from work and play for about 5-8 hours in the night, going to bet at around 3-4 AM and go to work at 9AM, it was bad for my health and also with the rest of things, I got past that by making a daily, weekly and monthly schedule around the most important things for me. I have a full time job, that was the main one, next was family, even now I make my daily schedule around this 2 things, poker is always there and it's not going anywhere, that I learn it the hard way. Maybe doing the same that I did will help you in the future.

There are some nice videos here on Pokerstrategy about how to managed your time and day. You can take a look =en&content_type=15&game_type=0&table_size=0"]here

Hope it helps. :f_thumbsup:

Thank you for the advice guys.

Unfortunately, I cannot sleep for 7 hours per night. I never manage to fall asleep before midnight, and my alarm always goes off at 5 in the morning because I leave for work at 6. I know that 5 hours are not enough, but I will add approximately 2 more hours of sleep after I come back from work. I understand that it's not ideal to split the 7 hours like that.
Additionally, I am off on Saturdays and Sundays, and during those days, I do get the necessary 7 hours of sleep per night.

Week 6

Hey everyone, it's been six weeks since I started this challenge, and time has flown by quickly. The tough times and the unfortunate streak are still following me, but I'm determined to outrun them soon.

Here's the graph and stats for this month playing NL5. It doesn't look impressive, but it could have been much worse. I believe I've managed this rough patch quite well so far, staying focused and avoiding unnecessary losses due to tilt.

Over the weekend, I took the opportunity to relax and get some much-needed rest. I feel rejuvenated and ready for a fresh week ahead. I'm hopeful that this will be the week when I can turn things around.

To better organize my poker time, I've decided to create a schedule. I plan to play two sessions every day, each lasting one hour, and dedicate at least one hour to studying from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, I'll increase the sessions to three, also lasting one hour each. I've found that playing beyond the one-hour mark tends to distract me and affect my focus at the table.

Additionally, I've started reading "The Mental Game of Poker" by Jared Tendler, which seems like the perfect time to start it considering my recent unlucky streak. However, I won't set a specific schedule for reading it; I'll simply pick it up whenever I have the time and inclination.

Furthermore, I've created an Excel file to track my daily progress, including the number of hands played, the time spent, and the amount of money won. Instead of writing a blog post every day, I believe this Excel file will provide a better overview and help me monitor my progress more effectively.

I hope all of you are doing well, and I wish you the best week possible ! :f_drink:

Wow, nice grind and your AI-EV looks like it's on the right way. Sorry for the badrun - it'll shift some day!

Your decision to schedule things is great! It's always a challenge to make the right decision between trying to stay flexible but also having some kind of solid routine.
Tracking is very important! I do the same, write stuff in my own excel. It's fun and helps to have an overview of what's going on.

btw, what does "GGCare" mean? And "Daily" is the daily freebe I assume?

Week 7 Update

Hands played : 8780
Profit : $86.08
Br Start of the week : $182.71
Br End of the week : $268.79

This week, I can't complain, I ran above expected value (EV) the whole time.

Yesterday was the most stressful session. I decided around 9 o'clock to play one last short session this week. Each table had a big fish with a VPIP of 60+.
In the first 20 minutes, I realized that I lost 4-5 buy-ins at different tables, all against fish, and all with stupid hands like AA vs. 57o, for example. I tilted right from the start of the session and although I planned to play for about 30 minutes, I ended up playing for 3 hours to recover some of what I had lost. I had to reduce the number of tables until, in the end, I played half an hour at only one table against a fish with an 80+ VPIP who managed to emotionally destroy me with his luck. Finally, after about 2 hours at that table with him, I managed to win back a few buy-ins and salvage the session. The fish left the table with over 600bb, even though I had taken a huge pot of over 500bb from him just 15 minutes ago. It was unreal how lucky he was the whole evening.

This week, I started mixing some NL10 tables after surpassing the $250 mark. There's not much difference between the stakes, and although I thought about continuing to mix between NL5 and NL10 this week, I ultimately decided it would be a waste of time.
So, this week, I will only play NL10.

Last week, my goal was to play 2 hours every day and study for 1 hour. Three hours for poker takes up most of my free time, which is quite challenging, but I will maintain the same goal this week, although it may be difficult to achieve. I failed to study for 7 hours this week; I only managed 4 hours of study. This time, I will try to improve on that.

That's about it from me. I hope the first week at NL10 goes well, and I wish everyone a good week at the tables.

Week 8 Update

Hands played : 3632
Profit : $73.33
Profit + Rakeback + GGCare + Daily= $112.32
Br Start of the week : $268.71
Br End of the week : $381.11

I had a pretty busy week. Two afternoons, I had to take my car to the service center to fix a few issues. Additionally, there was a day when I was simply too tired to play, so I decided not to open the poker tables at all. These are my excuses for having such a low volume, playing fewer than 4000 hands.

I know that this is a small sample size, and it's unlikely that I'll be able to maintain this win rate in the long run, but I'm really happy that I started playing NL10 on the right foot. Due to the low volume, I haven't completed the necessary points to unlock the Spin for the fish buffet, but I'll add it for the next week. Hopefully, I'll be lucky enough to receive $30, which represents 50% rakeback.

To punish myself for the low volume I played last week, I'll try to play way more this week. My target will be 10,000 hands.

Good luck to everyone at the tables this week!
