Pretty nice pot won today. Somehow managed to evade everything... Decided to 3bet pre being bit deeper in position.

Have not played during Easter now with visitor but this spot was on previous session.

Preflop is fine 3bet. Flop I probably misplayed somewhat. I was thinking in game this kind of hand could perhaps pot-fold sometimes but seems like its not really thing with ngs. If we had AKJ3 we could pot-call but this one would prefer half pot-fold. At least on QT7r that I checked with limited flops on this lite version. Anyway once I pot and opponent just calls I tend to assume there is not ton of sets or strong two pairs in his range. Some are possible but its weighted toward draws.

Turn Q is not necessarily bad but opponent was playing overly wide preflop and had shown aggro tendencies so I decided to just check on this rainbow board. Unfortunalely we dont get bet and river pairs the board.

So now it seems like straight is unlikely but also boats are somewhat unlikely. Some KQ, K7 or QQ perhaps but some of these might have bet turn also. So if we want to value bet I think block bet is way better as we want to give villain chance to bluff or call with some less than straight stuff. End result was kinda funky but this is something that sometimes happen with block bets.

This was nice spot to go for small x-r. My plan was to pretty much just give up if villain call and I dont get reasonable equity on turn.

Hand is actually not that great but good enough with A54 connectivity. Just checked in trainer that calling this is bit over -3bb EV and with AQ64 it would be fold with -3.85 EV.

Played some hexapro mixing 10€ and 25€ with shop tickets. So rakeback basically. First bunch didnt go too hot as I kept losing almost every allin. Perhaps shoved bit too wide but I think pool probably pverfold with some 7bb BvB with antes in play as well. But then won one 25€ for 75€ profit. Then perhaps my second or third time hitting 10x on last 25€ one. So 250€ in pot, 200€ for winner and 25€ to 2nd and 3rd.

Mainly some small pots with open raise steals or BvB limp-stab lines. Then got this resteal spot:

Went for limp trap sort of in this. I mean 20bb deep A9s I am definitely not folding to any raise. Question is do we call or shove versus small raise? Not sure but I think hand plays ok either way. Postflop kind of spot where I think villain is supposed to be quite sticky with some 5x or 7x as he wont necessarily have lot of Ax. Though I think especially weaker Axo wants to check probably. E.g. shove is bit meh, hand play quite bad vs call postflop and facing limp-shove with A4o is not great. But yeah I think no brainer triple barrel for me on most rivers.

Then important hold on setup spot. I minraise, BB shove 12bb.

Got some pots down in HU and had got into nice 3:1 lead but then this came. With 9bb and antes open shove is only option. I think limp-folding 98o would be ok.

This point I changed my approach to lot of minraising to see how opponent reacts as he was only limping BU. Went nicely and got down blinds few times or got call with T7o and cbet A84hh flop where I had Th for some nice backdoors. Villain snap folded. Then open shoved few no brainer hands. Some of them I could have limp-called but this opponent had played so passive that I thought he potentially wont make loose shoves. So just straightforward approach.

Finally last hand which I were on good side of setup:

Semibluffing in paired boards can be interesting sort of topic. In holdem when we semibluff and improve to what we draw we very often have strong enough hand to value bet. But how often is that the case in omaha especially on paired boards?

So I had this spot in previous session.

Preflop I would say call is standard. Though lets check as BvB we are supposed to be very aggro. Ok seems like both options have similar EV.

Anyway on flop we get wrap and bdfd. I think both options are ok but I would imagine raise to be preferred with this strong combo. Well I did check similar spot on COvsBU and there on 776r raises came more from oesd and wraps mainly called. On other hand ranges are very different there and CO only cbets 20%. In reality I think pool tend to overcbet heavily on this spot even though my BB range connect more into 886 flop. I dont think its big mistake at least to range check these mid or low paired boards in SB shoes as default line.

On flop villain does call so he probably has some overpairs, some draws and some trips+. But I did use only half pot raise on flop so he should still continue fairly wide. Which is good for my turn barrel. Now I did get fold but what would be our plan if villain call? Do we bluff river ever? Do we value bet straight? What if villain leads big after we hit straight?

My approach would be to mainly check river with this combo whatever I miss or hit. Problem is that when we raise flop we already start to tell story of having mainly trips+ for value. So once we come to river after big turn barrel ranges are pretty strong. So straight value betting river is very thin I think even in gto. Most likely some straight with trips or other good boat blocker might still bet but lets try to check e.g. on BBvsBU spot bit later.

Anyway the concept of semibluffing turn to just check river unimproved was bit weird for me for a while. Like in holdem side this kind of option is very rarely a thing. But idea in this example hand is to get better hands to fold. Overpairs, some 6x and maybe some of weakest trips (might be tough). But of course if action goes different and there has been only one street of betting before river then value bet threshold is lot lower. In this case its not just three street of aggression but also raising flop cbet. So straight by the river is just quite mediocre hand. But lets see:

So here we x-r flop oop and half pot turn so thats smaller sizing than I used. On river nut straight would block bet and on some safer river like 4♥: it was actually potting. I think thats also because boats are less likely on such low board than this 9. Versus shove nut straight is folding 60% of time. Calling always with two boat blocker and mixing with one blocker. But yeah here we are oop so we dont have option to check back.

PS: If we hit straight and villain lead big on river I would very often fold. We dont have much of boat blocker and villain is usually not looking to lead if he hits straight as we can easily have boats as well.

Some other spots from yesterday:

Spoiler

Should perhaps find fold on river in this. I dont like turn either but felt too weak to fold. We hit boat but do we really beat any of villain value range? Maybe nut flush.

On this simulation BU is not folding boats for most part but yeah I think it would not be most bad fold necessarily in reality.

Btw solver is only value betting nut flush with premium boat blockers.

This one I went for open raise, CO (absolute maniac) 3bets and SB call. I decided to 4bet but I think this was bit too wide. Perhaps ds or if I had KKJ8ss it would be fine. Versus 40% and 10%!AA ranges I had 32% equity. Maybe we can get SB to occasionally folding but probably not otfen. With KKJ8ss I would have close to 40% equity.

This was perhaps bit interesting line. I open CO and call BU 3bet. Flop went checked and turn went for x-shove. 3bet range rarely has straight here and we might get some mergy type bets that might even hero call. He did think for long time before folding.

I think lot of players tend to view promotions as positive thing which makes lot of sense. In practice you can view them as extra rakeback. For example Unibet sometimes have cash drops where whole table receives certain amount of euros instantly. Though those are set as absolute numbers and not relative to buyin. Which means for small stake player it might be 1+ buyin but on other hand in PLO50+ getting 4€ or 10€ is not much. It's still free money though and perhaps promo gets some recreationals joining. So clear positive.

Then there are some other promos where you win sort of slot tickets by playing X amount of hands/games per day. Usually limited to three per day per certain buyin levels and those are easy to reach. I have actually won 100€ main reward at least three times on this. Very small change though as requirement is to win 6-10 flips in row depending of ticket type. Clear positive again.

Then there are leaderboards (LB) which are based on rake amount or flops seen or overall aggression, etc. These can have pretty high rewards for top positions. You can also potentially argue that these measurements might change strategy of some players to ultimately benefit other players on the tables. E.g. I think in GG some players are minbetting more to ramp up points but this kind of strategy rarely make sense from game theory view.

Main issue though in LB is how it affect player base. Inevitably there are more regs that tend to play lot of tables. Especially true for those who aim for top positions. These players are not your worst opponents most of time but they are still mostly net negative for table EV. You can have edge over them but perhaps not enough to clearly beat rake and compared to recreational player they remove option to get good customer. On positive side you can more likely get action on wider time frame during a day.

This topic came to my mind when I compared table qualities after previous LB promo ended to what it was during it. Table selection was quite a big deal sometimes. Not super rare to see like 4 or even 5 same nick names in several tables in 6max table. Again some of these players are ok to have but compared to that soft recreational player... We are talking of whole different value ball park though.

So in case of Unibet I kinda like their approach of only sometimes having these LBs and they also change between formats. Maybe these are ultimately ok for most players kinda "rejuvenating" action but from EV€ point of view I do wonder... So how many stops to think what kind of cut these make to your win rate on the tables? E.g. let's say on average your win rate would be 8bb/100 post rake on PLO50. Now with LB games get tougher and it drops to 3bb/100. That accounts for 2.5€/100.

Now in case of Unibet these are weekly so let's say to get top position you need to play 3k hands per day for 21k per week. Just out of hat number here. Which means 210*2.5€ = 525€. Now main reward in Unibet for plo50-plo100 is 600€ if I remember right. So with those assumptions on hand amount and win rate loss it would be close to breakeven. But problem with low winrate is increased chance of getting into clearly losing run as well.

Anyway started to think this yesterday as I were surprised how soft the tables were. Like that absurd hand I posted on previous post. That was extra crazy but there was definitely quite a few moments where I wondered what the heck these people have used and if they are on extended weekend mode still.

So for original title question I would say promos are mainly blessing but when it comes to LBs I would be careful. There was in fact LB mode used in stars long ago (15+ years?) where reward was based on how much profit you made inside set amount of games in sng. It did felt kind of weird as now you give extra for those that already managed to run hot in short term. But I think it actually had certain logic as bigger volume did increase the chance of hot run but it was not clearly based on volume only. Btw those LBs were named after planets in our solar system if someone still remember.

I did not want to leave that without a comment.
I think you are pretty spot on. We have to look in detail for all promotions: do they affect your hourly by making traffic worse? This is very often overlooked, people simply consider it value added but never value taken away. Amazing post!

Btw on above hand I think my hand just play itself. But what if we are super deep, e.g. 400+bb? E.g. in this case EP had 600bb. If we call MP 160bb shove we have to be ready to play for it all. I just shoved my 200bb as it was almost all of it anyway. But is there stack depth we should just find fold? This sort of spot is Uber duper rare so thinking this is kinda useless I suppose :)

Have not played any poker really now for almost week. Main cause has been this absolutely marvelous game called Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Basically JRPG with lot of active elements in turn based battles. Definitely recommendable one if you like genre.

Anyway will be back to tables tomorrow and went for some training today on preflop stuff with skills. Did reset my earlier score to see what kind of results I could get with 100 hands on different spots:

Pretty happy with these RFI ones:

Spoiler

These two are versus open raiser in and out of position. Lot of mistakes in these are actually spots where two or sometimes even all options are very close in EV. So those I dont really count as any mistake but obviously there were some blunders.

Spoiler

Spoiler

VS 3bet IP and OOP. Some 4bets I would not necessarily do versus most players but its good to understand which hand types are highest EV 4bets from non AA. Solver does call some AA in position but in general this could be bad idea as people usually underfold vs 4bets.

Spoiler

Spoiler

VS 4bet IP and OOP. In these you can in general be tighter than solver as most people have way too AA heavy 4bet range. But there are some spots where solver also has barely any non AA hands in 4bet range. Prime one being EPvsBB.

Spoiler

Spoiler

Finally did also some squeeze spots. In reality flat caller very often has way wider call range than in solver though:

I guess you cant blame SB playing his hand that way though I will have AA extremely often. But on other hand when you have these two other guys improving pot odds...

Heh this one had nice outcome. I decided to slowplay as I have such strong hand (also blocking a lot) and I thought this villain might get bit wild versus weak looking lines.

This could be interesting one. So preflop standard open and call. Though if hand was low suit combo I would have folded. Opponent had been very active preflop. Maybe kinda 50/25/10 type.

Flop would be pretty close without bdfd but with it call seems only option. Turn is spot where I were bit torn between call and shove. Because if I call river SPR will be only 0.25 or so. When I had top pair that could sometimes be best hand I went for shove. If we had like 50€ deeper stacks then definitely just calling.
