[Closed] Is talking about poker and/or income a dumb thing to do?

Whilst i'm not from the poorer parts of the world, and I also don't make even a decent amount of money playing poker, I know exactly what you mean.

It's such an annoying thing trying to get someone to believe you that you can make money off poker, and it's something I don't like talking about even with my friends. In fact, especially with my friends. A month or so back I was having RL BR problems due to me being a poor student I couldn't afford to pay my rent, and my friends asked me how I was going to pay for it. I stupidly said that I was going to withdraw some from a poker site. This led to ridicule by one of my friends :p. Really annoying because he just wouldn't believe me and I instantly felt stupid for bringing it up. So tbh, despite me having showed him my Cashier to prove it, I think he thinks i'm some sort of gambling addict haha.

"Look, i've got $xxx in my account, proof"
"Yeah but how much did you put in!?"

*Sigh*

Anyway, after my off-topic(ish) rant, a cover story might be an idea, because it always leads to an annoying conversation when the majority of people simply don't believe poker is a skill game that you can make money from.

irrespective of where you come from its obv not nice to be cocky and brag about how much money you make..duh..

What are these "cards" you speak of? Never heard of them!

I find it best to keep the poker talk to the minimum when you go out with your friends that don't play poker, especially about how much your making. If someone's really annoying and want's to know just make up a number thats somewhere around average salary in your country.

And with people you just met just don't mention anything about poker, nothing good can come out of it. If they ask you what you do for a living just bluff em like a pro and make something up.

It depends on whom I am communicating with, to "outsiders" I tend to say when asked that I just do some stuff with pc, if they ask me to tell what kind of stuff i'm just like "oh this and that" and then they usually get the idea that I don't want to talk abt this subject. it probably sounds quite awkward tho.

Don't think there's anything wrong to tell what u actually do, ppl seem to take it very well actually, but then you get into all the poker talk and that's just annoying imo. Ofc if you live with parents and wear your mommas made sweatshirt I guess it's best not to tell or everyone will just think you are a degen loser.

However saying how much you make sounds kinda lame no matter what job you are into IMO.

If you earn way more then average salary you shoulden't talk about it... no-one will like you better for it.
Most of my friends know why I don't have a holiday job, they also know I dont talk easily about poker.

Always be vague, and when someone asked you how much you made that day just say you lost 20$ or something... it's impossible to understand the swings involved if you're not a poker player yourself.

Yeah they either will be jealous when you win a lot, or they will think your a gambling degenerate when you tell them you lost their montly salary in the session you just played ♦

It reminds me of all them janitors and warehouse workers who come to Estonia as tourists and think they kick ass because they make more than a local doctor.

Well, the reality is that comparing your income to the average local income doesn't really tell anything about you and your abilities. So if you don't want to be a dick, be modest when it comes to discussing your income.

I used to be open about it with everyone, it probably made me look like the asshole I surely am.

I don't think cover up stories are the solution since it will make you look shady. I like being vague , now I just make up numbers when people ask me how much I make unless they are close friends.

It really depends on who am i talking to. If im talking to these "but how much did you lose" or "i play on facebook and im really good" people i'm not very talkative and just say short answers so they realize i dont want to talk about it.
If im talking to close friends or to people who have some clue about poker, i have no problem answering any question they ask really.

Most people think I sell drugs its much more political acepted

If I'm asked I mostly try to get them invloved. Otherwise I don't bother, few would understand anything I say anyway.

lol I earn over 50 000 pounds a year in my real job, but I hate telling people I play poker they just dont understand!! im currently playing 12 cent games on titan and spend hours trying to make a few cents !! :-) But would not dare mention my "gambling" problem!!! lol :-)

I don't talk to may people how much I win, but sometimes tell to close friend. But I guess I should try to talk less, even if I would win money enough for a living. I don't make a good money, just once I was on a heater and won 220 euros in maybe 10K or 15K hands and told to my friend. But he has no idea about swings, so I could better not to tell.
