Grabbed by Holdem Manager
NL Holdem $1(BB) Replayer
SB ($117)
Hero ($185)
UTG ($224) VP:21/PFR:17/AF:3.4/WTSD:30/CBet :72
UTG+1 ($173)
CO ($76.10)
BTN ($92.61)

Dealt to Hero 4♥ 4♣

UTG raises to $3, fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero calls $2

FLOP ($6.50) 4♦ J♠ 2♦

Hero checks, UTG bets $4.50, Hero raises to $16, UTG calls $11.50

TURN ($38.50) 4♦ J♠ 2♦ 8♣

Hero bets $26, UTG calls $26

RIVER ($90.50) 4♦ J♠ 2♦ 8♣ T♠

Hero bets $140 (AI), UTG calls $140

I wouldn't call with 44 vs utg 100bb deep but here I think it is ok.
Flop C/R is fine I think. Once he calls he has 22,JJ, AJ, FD or QQ+
8 and T don't change anything.
I decided to shove to make it like spewy (eventhgough I have to say it is hard to balance) lloking like busted FD or something. I think he could find a hero call with ovepairs,22. What do you think?

If I value bet something like 60 what do I do if he shoves over?

I'd call all the pps in bb for a set with 100bbs
I don't like the over bet on river

I suppose it depends on villain but I dont like calling any PP in BB just for set mine.

Can you explain why you don't like the over bet on river?

I'm usually folding unless I have some reads.
It's hard to extract much value postflop because checkraises look very strong and you hardly get all in as most people are not stacking off in single raised pots with overpairs.

I like the overbet on the river.

If we bet small we look like we're trying to get some additional value so the opponent should have an "easy" fold with most of his overpairs and TP type hands.

By shoving we polarize our range a lot, he probably perceives it to be {JJ, 44, 22, busted FDs} and might even weight it more towards the busted FDs because we "would not shove it with a set because it looks so strong".

Totally agree with you. I also like my shove, he called with 22

Just one Q though: How do I balance these overshoves on the river? At the moment I only do it for value but I would need to be more balanced in these spots. For example could I overshove with busted FD here in these spots? I am always reluctant bc it is very very expensive if I get caught. What kind of board/opponent should I do this on/vs?

as u said, so what's ur calling range on sb and bb?

while utg(22 18 open raises 12% in utg) open raises, others fold
what would u call on sb?
what would u call on bb while sb folds?

and if there's 1 or 2 cold callers on mp or co or btn,
what's the calling range in ur opinio?

thanks

You don't ;).
At the moment I only do it for value but I would need to be more balanced in these spots.
Actually there is no need to be balanced unless the opponent is very good and adjusts his callingfrequencies well.
For example could I overshove with busted FD here in these spots?
No! It is a good spot to overbetshove for value, or, in other words: we expect to get called.
Therefore it is a bad spot to bluff as per definition.

I am always reluctant bc it is very very expensive if I get caught. What kind of board/opponent should I do this on/vs?
Generally it's not about the board or the opponent, but about the opponents range.
For example say we call an openraise OOP and c/c the flop with a draw. The opponent checks back the turn.
On a blank river it might be a good spot to overbet because the opponent clearly has no strong hand (would bet turn for value), but he prepared to call a normally sized bet vs busted draws.
If you bet 3 times pot he will have to think twice.

Generally you should always keep in mind that this is a lot about history.
F.e. when you overbet the 2nd or 3rd time you might want to weight your range towards valuehands because the opponents will get suspicious at some point and start calling.

Probably nothing but strong hands I don't want to 3bet because I don't have history yet and will get too many folds.

Depends on the opponents. If the caller(s) are regs I don't have a callingrange.
If the callers are fish I call PPs and perhaps some SCs depending on how fishy they actually are, but it's impossible to make general statements about that.

I think bierbaer made a very good point about balancing this overshove, or the lack thereof. Good players seem to think that other regs are more aware of their own game than they actually are, when in reality they have to be pretty good (and have played quite a bit with you) before they catch on :f_biggrin:

As counterintuitive as it might seem, allot of the time at this limit playing exploitable in some spots will generate the most profit, even against good regs.
