This is another hand where I raised pre-flop and gave up before the showdown.

Party, $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 9 Players

CO: $2.50 (125 bb)
Hero (SB): $2 (100 bb)
BTN: $6.27 (313.5 bb)
UTG+2: $2.03 (101.5 bb)
UTG+1: $2 (100 bb)
MP1: $2.29 (114.5 bb)
MP2: $0.77 (38.5 bb)
BB: $4.10 (205 bb)
MP3: $1.28 (64 bb)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7:s 7:h
4 folds, MP3 calls $0.02, CO folds, BTN raises to $0.08, Hero calls $0.07, BB calls $0.06, MP3 folds

Flop: ($0.26) J:d 4:h 2:d (3 players)
Hero bets $0.19, BB calls $0.19, BTN folds

Turn: ($0.64) K:d (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $0.45, Hero folds

Spoiler

Results: $0.64 pot ($0.03 rake)
Final Board: J:d 4:h 2:d K:d
Hero mucked 7:s 7:h and lost (-$0.27 net)
BB mucked and won $0.61 ($0.34 net)

Let me guess: c/f the flop, right?

I think here it would be the best option to check/fold flop - you have neighter iniciative nor position. You have called preflop for setminimg, on flop you didn't hit and there is J - an overcard and two opponents - so I would give up this hand, unless I would hit free card 7 on later streets.

(In your description is probably mistake - you didn't raise preflop)

Hi, VorpalF2F!

Well, check/folding the flop is seldom a mistake indeed. You haven't invested much, saw a cheap flop with the chance of hitting a monster hand, and now only have 2nd pair, playing out of position in a multiway pot with a possible flush draw on the board.

Depending on quite a few factors, betting with your 77 is *ok* (not "fistpumping great" but *ok*) to "protect", i.e., to make all overcards fold and not give them free cards. Problem is: it will be very tough to play turn and river, even if you have very good player/board/range reading skills. Vs. 2 opponents it is VERY thin though, especially since any of them can easily have a J. To avoid those problems altogether, I myself would just check/fold and save my chips for clearer spots.
