I mean you have just nothing on the Flop you should just fold. Call would be more viable with at least a backdoor flushdraw but your hand is absolutely crappy and if you wanna proceed, as you already said, you should go ahead and turn your hand into a bluff, trying to push him off anything better like Qx Jx Kx etc. Many straightcards can help you building up more foldequity. As played check back on the River is ok. You have just 4th pair and no kicker and the 8 makes it less likely that he'S going to call with just AT or something. He could have better 7x or A6. River is close but with no accurate reads check behind is fine.
