Here I would bet/fold the turn. He check calls the flop, which he could do with a single diamond. That is what you need to protect against. If he has two, or a set, then so be it, he must raise the turn, and you can fold. As played, calling the river is fine, since you invited him to bluff, and he either made a weak bluff bet, or a weak value bet.

Never bet turn for information.
You should bet for value, intention to call c/r or check behind for pot control.
