The UTG looks like a somewhat loose TAG (except that he never check-raises, he donks and raises).

PokerStars - $0.05/$0.10 (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

CO: $2.15
BTN: $3.39
SB: $2.97
Hero (BB): $1.20
UTG: $4.32
MP: $1.96

SB posts SB $0.02, Hero posts BB $0.05

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.07) Hero has J♥ 8♠

UTG raises to $0.10, fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero calls $0.05

Flop: ($0.22, 2 players) 4♣ 7♠ 5♥
Hero checks, UTG bets $0.05, Hero raises to $0.10, UTG calls $0.05

Turn: ($0.42, 2 players) 2♣
Hero bets $0.10, UTG calls $0.10

River: ($0.62, 2 players) 9♥
Hero bets $0.10, ...

It feels a bit thin to do this with a gutshot only.

Q: Preflop: Fold? (I see I am outside the PS charts by some margin.)

Q: Flop + turn + river: Is it too optimistic?

Q: Say that A♥ peels of on the river instead of the 9. Would it be correct to just give up?

My thoughts after the event:

Spoiler

If I decide to play this kind of hand versus an UTG opener I pretty much have to attack a flop like this. But best is to fold preflop.

/Johan = :f_confused:

preflop is a close decision, i personally mostly call with J8o, but it doesn't really matter, it's a marginal call.

flop and byond: you have one of the weakest hands possible in your range, no SD value at all, and a weakish but ok draw, i definitely think the correct plan is to x/r bet bet on most turns/rivers.

on an A river you valuebet less (bc it's a terrible card for your value range) and so you'll have to bluff less also. having said that, i don't think giving up with a J hi bluff is necessary, bc taht would leave you with like no bluffs at all.

The only bit I have a problem here with really is preflop, personally I'd fold vs a UTG raise

The rest of the hand, as redskwerl said, I think you played pretty much fine.

There are questions as to how necessary the buff is, you'll have 89, T8s and T9s to bluff before this so it's certainly close as to whether it's worth a bluff but once you decide to go with it you played it well
