Hero posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.15) Hero has Q♠ A♦

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, BTN raises to $0.25, Hero raises to $0.75, fold, BTN calls $0.50

Flop: ($1.60, 2 players) 9♦ T♠ 3♦
Hero bets $1.10, BTN calls $1.10

Turn: ($3.80, 2 players) Q♣
Hero checks, BTN bets $1.80, Hero raises to $3.80, BTN calls $2.00

River: ($11.40, 2 players) 5♥
Hero bets $6.79 and is all-in, BTN calls $4.72 and is all-in

Hero shows Q♠ A♦ (One Pair, Queens) (Pre 43%, Flop 27%, Turn 77%)
BTN shows J♣ J♥ (One Pair, Jacks) (Pre 57%, Flop 73%, Turn 23%)
Hero wins $19.90

I decided to take a more deceptive line after I hit on the turn and just checked. It certainly worked out nicely in this example, but what do you think about this kind of play in general? Would you prefer to bet for value and protection? And would you say it is justifiable to show that much aggression after villain tries to float?

Merry Christmas everyone! :f_love:

Hey Harrier88,

you can also think about flatting preflop and the depends on villain stats. If he rerally folds to 3bet we are doing better than his calling range. On the other hand we can make a bluff out form our hand so it sis worth to be careful here. I am not really sure about cBet. Villain won't fold better hands here and will hardly call with worse. But we have backdoor flush draw some and overcards so we might do quite well. When we hit Q on the turn i would play b/f and. On that river i don't see many hands that we beat. Maybe JJ and KQ. I think we overplayed our hand a bit.

AQos can be tough to play out of position and on the defense, so I don't think flat calling would lead to many profitable situations. If a 3bet was too strong in this situation, I guess we'd be better off folding.
That said, I think this is actually not a bad spot for a 3bet. Villain's range should be relatively loose since he's on the button, and it might even include a few weaker aces. There is also the possibility that villain is trying to steal, and fold to any raise. And if all else fails, there is still a chance that we can take down the pot with a c-bet. We don't have this opportunity with a call, and a fold would be too weak in my opinion.

Villain wasn't really supposed to call with worse hands, I just wanted to take down the pot without a contest. He should have plenty of drawing hands that missed the flop in his range, so I should have had a decent amount of fold equity. If he had raised, at least I would have known that I'm beat. I also planned to give up the hand on the turn in case of a call.

I saw myself ahead and wanted villain to believe that my c-bet was a pure bluff (which was true) and my hand is still unimproved, which is a pretty common situation. He should be willing to float with pretty much any two cards here.
Bet/fold probably would have been a good choice in a multiway pot or if villain was UTG, but in this case, I believe we are ahead too often. Besides, I'm pretty sure villain would have folded to any bet. 3bet preflop, bet flop, bet turn, is a very aggressive line indicative of a monster hand.

Both villain and me were pot-commited, I don't think there were many alternatives. Our hand simply is too strong for check/fold, especially considering the pot odds. Check/call would only give my opponent the chance to see a "cheap" showdown with worse hands.
