Are poker sites virus free?

Yes, virus free unless you are getting some shady out-of-the-way skin.

However certain sites (including large skins/networks) have been known to trigger false positives on various anti-virus softwares.

Not all of the Poker sites are virus free, there may a chance of getting virus with these sites. I think you will be having no problem if you have already installed anti virus software with an updated version. Any ways be careful while using these sites. I can produce you with the more detailed view and with exact information if needed by asking one of my friends having experience in online poker tournaments.

In 4 years I have never had my security software report anything related to a poker room. I did have some false positives with some trackers though, but that was sorted quickly.

You should be running a competent anti-malware tool.

There are a lot of good free ones. It is not my place to recommend anything specific, but I would suggest that you google "free anti-virus software", then go down a bit and read the reviews from gizmo and PCMag, and then try a few.

Yes, but only those that are reputable, like Carbon Poker, Titan Poker, and bet365 among several others. As a noob, I spent a lot of time on review sites such as top15poker.com, to ensure that I play only on the best rooms and because they have some great beginner tips and also do a great job of ranking top online poker sites and providing reviews and comparison lists.

Nobody knows whether anything is virus free, except possibly those who have planted a virus. Could happen even to Stars (while quite unlikely).

Iv'e had two iPoker skins that were clearly infected. On both occasions there was a background process (casino.exe) that was almost impossible to get rid of. It registered itself as a service, in the autostart.bat file, in the registry, you name it. Much like Google Update used to behave b t w. It used to behave like a virus according to all definitions, and therefore was a virus, but a "relatively harmless" one. Don't know if Google Update still behaves this way. A program that does everything to avoid being uninstalled should always be regarded with utter suspicion.

I wouldn't fully trust Titan or bet365 because they are iPoker clones, and these (provably) are easy to manipulate. Even reputable and classy software like Full Tilt and Stars have had "leaks". For instance, the executables have (in the past, don't know now) been exporting functions they definitely should not export. A knowledgeable C/C++ programmer could easily have gained entrance. (LoadLibrary->GetProcAddr->Call function)

Just echoing the statements of the previous posts; it is certainly in the best interests of any reputable poker sites (keyword being reputable) to ensure that there are no security concerns with their software.

Issues with virus potential generally leads to security concerns, which nobody wants to take a risk with, given the amount of money that is in play on a daily basis.

I would certainly stay away from any "seedy" poker rooms, and stick to the more well known ones as well as avoiding any software that seems too good to be true.
It is more likely to get a virus of sorts from free to download software that claims it can do the things that HM2 or PT4 do for free.
