Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

UTG: 134.8 BB (VPIP: 28.57, PFR: 22.86, 3Bet Preflop: 8.33, Hands: 36)
CO: 100 BB (VPIP: 15.24, PFR: 13.33, 3Bet Preflop: 2.86, Hands: 108)
BTN: 104.1 BB (VPIP: 20.00, PFR: 20.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 6)
SB: 100 BB (VPIP: 36.36, PFR: 30.91, 3Bet Preflop: 21.74, Hands: 58)
Hero (BB): 100 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has Q♦ J♦

fold, CO raises to 3 BB, fold, fold, Hero calls 2 BB

Flop: (6.5 BB, 2 players) 5♠ 9♦ 7♦
Hero checks, CO bets 4 BB, Hero raises to 12 BB, CO calls 8 BB

Turn: (30.5 BB, 2 players) 9♥
Hero bets 14 BB, CO raises to 33 BB, fold

When he calls on the flop I'm not really sure how to proceed. Once he raises I know I'm beat, but I'm just curious overall as to what you think of my play here?

I feel a check/raise is best because I have two overs, a flush draw, and a backdoor straight draw, and it's hard for him to have much of anything. When he calls, I'm not really sure whether or not to barrel turn.

It's hard for me to represent a nine because a check/raise on the flop doesn't make sense with one, maybe I should have given up turn.

What y'all think?

How its hard for him to have anything?
You're playing against nit... Even check/raising is debatable.

My feeble old mind thinks you tried to play poka without a plan. You need a plan for the hand preflop and adjust that plan post. For example, you may call pre with 72o with the sole intention of bluffing three streets, but have to change your mind later, given villain's action/reaction/board development, etc.
Not saying you should, would or could here, but at least you would have a plan.
Not knowing what to do when villain calls the flop seems like you had no plan for that eventuality is what I'm failing dismally to pass on to you.

I hope I made some sort of sense.

Mal.

Btw turn betsizing tells everything.

I planned to call from the blinds because he could open light there, and I don't want to simply fold every blind. I'll call with a hand like this maybe 40-50% of the time? That % depends on the player of course.

The check/raise was to capture a continuation bet. I didn't have many hands on him but he'd continuation bet every board so far, including boards that weren't so good to.

I'm posting this hand basically because I don't know if this is a good turn to barrel or not, and I'm curious about people's arguments for or against.

The bet sizing was small because if I had a monster, I'd be able to get him all-in on the river with that sizing. As such, I want to size my valuebets and my bluffs the same way.

Flop : this hand is good enough to call ,not the best to raise ,because if you get 3bet you are in a bad shape ...and you are not happy to go broke here OTF with the third nut FD ,pick up to raise here some strong draws like NUT draws and combo draws that you can go broke with them OTF if you believe you have some FE..or weak draws like BD FD and gutters that you can fold easily to a 3bet flop..

turn : - your play : barreling on paired card is the worst thing you can do..it narrows your value range so much and you could be drawing dead..and any PP will continue on a such a good card for him..

-my play : there is a ton of good things that can happen after calling the flop,if he checks turn you can donk bluff river,if he barrels on scare card A/K (and he is aggrol ,not passive) you can bluff x/r ...you can call with good odds to FD,and you can call on any Q/J/T ,just to mention if he barrels big on a blank just give up..

thanks

Nice. All makes total sense and is pretty consistent with what I've been thinking lately about this hand :P

umm interesting hand

first, preflop is a reeeeeeaallly clear defend.
as for postflop can't say i hate it, but what's your plan (what do you want to make him fold)? do you think his cbet range has too much air and will bet/fold a lot? do you think his continuing range will have a lot of draws, pair+draw and even overpairs which might not take the heat?
what value hands can you rep, will he give you credit? is c/r better than c/c? what to do against a flop 3bet?

i mostly dislike it because facing a 3bet with a hand like this really sucks and you don't have enough info on him, other than that he seems kinda tight and so he most likely has a somewhat strong range to cbet this specific texture. and it's generally a bad idea to try to get people off strong ranges :f_biggrin:

i think you can't rep that many value hands on this board (if you seem tight from blinds you shouldn't get much credit for like 97s 86s). that turn sucks as well because you rep even less value hands...
if you fire the turn, you should be aware that he's most likely continuing pretty much his whole flop range and you'll have to fire the river.

i think this plays well enough as a c/c, you have lots of cards in which you can continue somehow (including by bluff c/r) and if he checks behind ott you can bet the river with sizing depending on runout and what you want him to fold.
