Top Pair Top Kicker on Dry Board

Hello everyone,

I would like to share with you a hand I recently played on PS. My question is whether my flop bet was correct or not, because I suspect I didn't follow the principle that you should bet to either make a better hand fold, or a worse hand call. I bet the flop trying to prevent my opponent to get a free card and maybe outdraw me.

Here is the hand:

SB: 138 BB (VPIP: 71.43, PFR: 14.29, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 7)
BB: 103 BB (VPIP: 50.00, PFR: 33.33, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 6)
UTG: 102 BB (VPIP: 14.29, PFR: 14.29, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 7)
Hero (CO): 98.5 BB
BTN: 27.5 BB (VPIP: 29.63, PFR: 3.70, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 29)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has A♠ K♠

fold, Hero raises to 3 BB, fold, SB calls 2.5 BB, fold

Flop: (7 BB, 2 players) 5♠ A♥ 2♣
SB checks, Hero bets 5 BB, fold

Hero wins 7 BB

Hi Bolso,

Your play looks fine to me, bet size is good as well. On this board he might call a bet with a pocket pair, and he will have several Ax hands in his range he can call with. Because it´s unlikely he has a straight draw, (he shouldn´t have many 3´s and 4´s in his range) you could consider checking the flop, giving him a free card and betting the turn, thus slowplaying your top pair top kicker, since you most likely will still be ahead. However, this could potentialy put you in an awkward spot. Just putting in a continuation bet here will probably be the default play for most players.

On such a board you can cbet smaller- 1/2 pot.
In your case you hold TPTK, board is dry, you can think of checking flop and then betting turn and river. And of course cbetting is not bad too.

Yes, it is correct. You try to make a worse hand call (like AQ, AJ, and some straight draws). Because you are in a way ahead/way behind situation, no better hands will fold here (aka 2p or sets).
