So I thought this was an interesting hand and I wanted to share it and get your thoughts. I have been focusing more and more on playing my range vs opp range instead of playing the cards, which has put me into some interesting bluff situations, some of which have worked out and others which havent. For the most part though I have been successful now that my focus is more on range.
NL Holdem $0.25(BB)
HJ ($15)
CO ($69.08)
BTN ($25)
HERO ($27.55)
BB ($30.86)
UTG ($26.64)
Dealt to Hero K♦ K♣
UTG Folds, HJ Folds, CO Folds, BTN Raises To $0.6 (Rem. Stack: 24.4), HERO Raises To $1.8 (Rem. Stack: 25.65), BB Folds, BTN Calls $1.3 (Rem. Stack: 23.1)
So here preflop to me this is an easy raise. Being in the small blind I keep the 3 bet pretty small since I will be out of position vs the button. Villian is a 26/21 reg through 193 hands. I feel I will have a range advantage vs him since his range is wider opening from the Button. In this session I also found myself in a bunch of 3 betting spots, which im sure was noticed (I have been focusing on 3 betting more, especially from the blinds). I also feel good about this going heads up because there is a nitty player in the BB who folds ton from the blinds. I think if I remember correctly his fold to steal is around 87%. I was picking on him all session.
Flop ($4.05) J♠ 9♠ 2♦
HERO Bets $2.55 (Rem. Stack: 23.10), BTN Calls $2.55 (Rem. Stack: 20.55)
Flop comes with a flush draw & a Jack. Of course I can put in my opponents range suited aces, right now more likely AKs, AQs, ATs, along with of course overpairs, JJ, and also could have KQs. I dont think he is calling my 3 bet with 99, but he could have being in position vs me. So I could have done a procedural check to see where Villian was at, but I thought this was an appropriate spot for a C-bet because at this point I am likely ahead of his Ax and KQs. I see really no point in checking here, and potentially giving a free card on a flush draw.
Turn ($9.15) J♠ 9♠ 2♦ 3♣
HERO Bets $4.32 (Rem. Stack: 18.78), BTN Calls $4.32 (Rem. Stack: 16.23)
The 3 of clubs comes out and this really changes nothing here. I lead out again because I have no reason not to and he calls. So now im thinking more and more he likely has a set. Sure he def can be calling this with Ax suited. Maybe here I could have bet bigger to enduce a fold and make him really pay to keep going after the flush. Still at this point I have no reason to back down, and if he calls I do have the option of a check/fold or check/call on the river. I dont get my fold and to the river we go.
River ($17.79) J♠ 9♠ 2♦ 3♣ Q♠
HERO Bets $8.4 (Rem. Stack: 10.38), BTN Raises To $16.23 (allin) (Rem. Stack: 0.00), HERO Folds
So the flush draw is now completed, but its an interesting card in that it is the Q of spades. Drive Hud has this amazing feature where you can see all the combos an opp has shown at showdown, and a large majority of his cards at showdown of course are pocket pairs and suited cards. When the Q of spades comes out, this now limits his range and the only combos im worried about for him getting a flush are AKs and ATs, both of which he very easily could have called my 3bet with, but more and more this is smelling to me like he had a set of jacks the whole time. So now I think about that fact my hand is very concealed and if he doesnt have the nut flush draw, then he can put me on the nut flush draw as I would absolutely be betting this way with AKs, and that is something I would 3 bet with preflop. So I decide to bet my range here representing a nut flush draw. So the bet sizing I think could have been a give away that I didnt have it. If I had the nut flush draw I would have went all in, but I didnt do this because of the possibility that he could have it,
and there was no way he would call my all in with anything worse than pocket K, so I bet 2/3 pot. After he shoves I have to fold of course. Maybe he had it, maybe he didnt, because like me he could easily call down Ax suited. So I thought this was an interesting hand I wanted to share.
