SB and BB are passive fish? If not, then I'm not sure if it is good to limp 97o here.
I might have tried to get it in already OTF. Your hand is strong but still vulnerable, villain will probably stack off with any 2pair,set, some draws and so on. Ofc Q9 is possible but I still think you have to stack off there.

flop is whatever, you gotta raise, but you're at best going to be only a slight favorite when villain gives action by 3betting.
if SB is a reg, he's going to be raising preflop with most hands that you would actually beat like JJ, TT, JTs, so you're hoping for like 88, T8, or some draw which he may or may not play aggressively... in fact, stacking off with T8 would be overplay, so it's hard to find a decent player giving you action with many hands that you beat.
so what you really want is for them to just call it down with some TP type hand, but there are fucktons of action killers (or they might just be drawing and hit something to beat you) so you will rarely take their stack by the river.

so well, all in all, you probably cannot avoid losing the stack, if there's any possibility that the "retard factor" comes into play. but ironically, you have to realize that this is not a flop where you are going to make tons of money with this hand

I think that this situation could be avoided by folding preflop, as guys said. As played, we have to get the money in the middle, but I would raise the Flop.

I'd always fold 97o preflop in this situation.

Raising on the flop is good, to defend your hand, because there is a flush draw on the board.

Agree with raising the flop and getting it in. Board is wet and we should extract value.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I knew I played the hand poorly and that's why I posted it. I was about to sit out (and already had on my other tables) to end the session and this was the last hand I was going to play. I do typically fold in this spot but I also do want to have a limp calling range from the BTN since some of these games tend to be so limp heavy. Still, I agree that raise or fold is far better here.

The other thing I would have done differently is raise the flop, as a few of you have pointed out. In this hand, it wouldn't have changed the end result but it's still the best way to play these kind of hands moving forward. Thanks again.
