Hello,
Im returning to online poker after 9 years. I had high hopes as I was able to beat micros before, but now Im not doing so well.

This is not a QQ thread. I do realise my cash game is rusty and I played only tournaments in last few years, so Im gonna have some fallacies in strategy. I came here because I learned all the basics on cz verison. While Ill be refreshing the strategies myself there are some things I havent found yet, or to the extend I would like.

  • I bought Holdem manager because I like to track things rather than for HUD. But since I got it Im gonna learn to use it. Is there a good source for explanation of all the stats and their use. I do understand what aggression factor is, but I have no clue how to use that information.
  • What is the recommended order of stats to add to your HUD? Plugging 8 stats from start is overwhelming. I started with stats I know and understand well and Im planning to adding to that. Right now I got VPIP/PFR/CB/postflopAF.
  • Why is there nowhere mentioned the win rate? Absolute newbie should be happy with winrate 3,33BB/100. For the sake of an argument lets say he can keep it up forever up to nosebleeds. Now that means that he needs 300 hands to get 10BB and 3000 for 1 buy in. Everybody is going to start at 1 table, on zoom they can pull 150-300 hph (?) That means at least 10 hours to get 1 buy in, 100 hours to move up the stakes. That means they can move up the stakes every month. The problem the newbie see is the 10BB profit / hour is 20 cents. That is extremely slow for anybody. They dont realise they're doing well. I think this should be covered somewhere.
  • Lex V in one of his recent old school videos mentioned how to think about hands. That you cant look at the result, but you have to look from the beginning of the hand and work forward. I knew that, but I never really did review my hands. So now it got me thinking. How do I sort the hands to review. I cant review all the hands and I cant just choose the lost hands. Because by this logic I could be reviewing hands I played perfectly and all my winnings are from miss play. If I check only the hands Im not sure how to play, I might have a huge leak I dont know about, and so on. What the best practice here?

Also I play on partypoker NL5, cause there is no fast forward nl2 and I really cant stand regular tables :f_zZz:

Hey winterguy,

We have some videos where a coach explains using HUD,stats and tracking software. You could search with words "stats" "hud" and "database". Unfortunately some of the mare for gold+ members but there is still some good stuff for silver :)

What stats you want on your hud is totally up to you. Some prefer to keep it simple, some tend to add a lot of stats. What you have on your hud is a good start but of course there are many key stats missing. For example 3bet stats, fold vs flop cbet and so on. And blind battles are quite different than total 3bet and PFR stats so some prefer to add steal and re-steal stats for those. You can start building up and tuning your hud slowly when you have more information and feel comfortable with it. The most important thing to know is that you need a big sample to look at some of these stats. Misinterpreting stats or building your strategy on a too small sample is worse than not using a hud at all.

Your point about winrate is good. 3bb/100 would already be quite good and the problem indeed is that not many beginners feel satisfied because the money is still quite small. But at the lowest stakes our goal should be to learn the game and be happy if we win. At NL2 the focus shouldn't be on making money. I have been thinking about writing an article about this.

When reviewing your hands, you could create a list of tough spots you want to work on and filter those hands. For example if you think you are calling too loose OTR you could filter for hands where you called OTR. But with not very strong knowledge reviewing your own hands might be difficult. As you mentioned you might have some big leaks you can't spot yourself. This is where our hand review board might come in handy. As a private coach I'll of course suggest taking coaching :f_biggrin: Getting help from someone experienced is great because then you don't have to spend time to look for your own leaks and you'll learn to fix them faster.

Hi winterguy, do I understand well that you come from the Czech community? I do too, it is always nice to see a fellow Czech grinder here. :f_drink: I am going through something similar, I returned to poker after 4 years and I am basically starting from the beginning on NL2 again.

From the lines on the graph, I would say one thing. It appears to me that you are too loose and aggressive for this limit. It results in the flat non-showdown winnings line and decreasing showdown winnings because you get into too many marginal spots and players on micros are stationary. But I can be entirely wrong and it can be just variance on this sample of hands. :f_cool:

As for the HUD, it is totally up to you what stats you use. But I would recommend just the super basic stuff because on micros one should be focused more on the gameplan in general rather than making decisions based on some detailed stats. Usually you wont even have the sample size for that. I would save that for higher limits. I myself use only VPIP/PFR/3bet to be able to categorizeplayers in order to adjust my play against them in general.

And as la55i said, on micros it should be about solid game, getting value from fish, lots of study and patience. The cash will come later if you are good. Somewhere around NL25-NL50 it starts to be interesting. Until then, you should focus on your winrate but not from the point of view of dollars.

Btw. How are you playing on Party Poker? The only explanation is that you play from different country than the Czech Republic :f_biggrin:
