Hi all,

I just wanted to discuss how you make notes of other players and how you label them. I thought I'd first discuss how I do it and then see what everybody thinks and if they could add or change anything to my strategy.

I use PokerTracker4 so that does most of the work for me, but I look at the players HUD and if I have played approx 100 hands with them, I will look at their VPiP and PFR. If they are for example look something like 10/8 I would label them as a NIT. Similarly, if a player has HUD stats that look more like 35/25 I would label them as a LAG player.

Aside from being able to label a player as tight/loose or passive/aggressive I'm not sure the HUD stats can tell you much else? Thats why I like to be observant in hands and look back through hand histories whilst on the table to see when my opponents went to showdown. Then I'll make notes on how they played certain cards in certain situations. For example do they only donk bet with a made hand? Do they play draws aggressively?

Also, if a player makes a very strange play, I would label them as a fish and make a detailed note of what they did so I can try to play more pots with them. I very rarely however label somebody as a reg or a 'shark'. Not because I think there aren't any on my tables, but simply because I do not know what to look for? Can I use their HUD stats as an indication, for example could I label a TAG player with stats of 16/14 as a reg and avoid pots with them based on this?

I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts and opinions! But that is basically where I am at with making notes and labelling players online.

Hi DannyHorsley,
I generally let the HUD speak for itself, and use PokerStar's note capability to record unusual plays, or tendencies.

My notes are in the form:
[stake][position][note]

eg:
NL25 D 4Bet 99 vs BB 3x 3Bet and so on

"Tendencies" might just be something like:
"Raises over multiple limpers a lot"

and so on

Cheers,
VS

This is how i label my opponents.
RSS means Random Stack Strategy - a strategy developed by the Pokerstrategy spanish community.
Alien REG - I label them as Aliens people that aren't from Spain and France. I play on Pokerstars.fres .

I very rarely however label somebody as a reg or a 'shark'. Not because I think there aren't any on my tables, but simply because I do not know what to look for?

If you watch the image the player from the BU i have him marked as a REG (TAG) he has good stats as:

PFR 22 VPIP 17
WTSD 29 W$SD 50 and WWSF 44
3bet 7 and Fold3b 64

This are mostly the stats that i use to label : NIT, TAG and LAG.
For Calling station, Limper and Maniac i also check their stats postflop before i label them.

I'm using the HUD to read their tendencies when i play, so i dont get to many notes, unlles somebody does some moves that are really tricky or dumb.

My strategy is kinda similar than Vorpal's. I let the HUD speak for itself. Meaning that I tag people and take notes when I get some other info that isn't easily visible at the HUD.
Tagging villains based on 100 hands can lead to big trouble. For example that 10/8 guy at 100 hands can easily play 22/18 on the long run. And the LAG with 35/25 can end up being 50/30 or 22/15. So imo it is better to tag guys because you saw them do something fishy. When you notice that they barrel and raise super aggressively all the time and did show a bluff often, or if they call OTR super lightly.

When it comes to tagging regs, I have 2 tags. Reg fish and good reg. And I basically give those tags when I notice the guy plays a lot and has reasonable stats so he probably has some kind of understanding of the game. Reg fish are those who are decent players but I have some stats or notes that let me still easily exploit them. Good reg tags I give to those who I really don't like to play against. Someone I have noticed is quite competent and playing against them wouldn't make me tons of money on the long run.

Some brilliant advice guys, much appreciated!

If you watch the image the player from the BU i have him marked as a REG (TAG) he has good stats as:

PFR 22 VPIP 17
WTSD 29 W$SD 50 and WWSF 44
3bet 7 and Fold3b 64

This seems like a nice method. I guess we can note somebody with these statistics as a ‘good reg’ and avoid pots with them and then adjust our notes based on their future plays.
