PokerStars - $0.16 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BB: 176.94 BB
UTG: 104.31 BB
Hero (MP): 149.81 BB
CO: 78.94 BB
BTN: 84 BB
SB: 232.25 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has A♠ A♥

UTG raises to 2.31 BB, Hero raises to 11 BB, fold, fold, fold, BB calls 10 BB, fold

Flop: (24.81 BB, 2 players) 2♣ K♥ J♦
BB checks, Hero checks

Turn: (24.81 BB, 2 players) 7♥
BB checks, Hero bets 7.13 BB, BB calls 7.13 BB

River: (39.06 BB, 2 players) 3♦
BB checks, Hero bets 27.63 BB, BB raises to 158.81 BB and is all-in, Hero???

The villain is a regular with 21/19/3B 6/CB67 254 hands

I'm thinking this reg on BB flatted me pre while I 3bet a very tight player on UTG so I think I kinda played carefully on this board texture.

What do you think?

Smells like JJ :f_biggrin: I dont wanna put him on a certain hand instead of a range but it is very likely he could play JJ like this. He must be aware that you range is quite strong preflop since you 3bet vs UTG. His cold call seems like a hand he does neither wanna fold nor shove - like JJ, or QQ or AK or maybe even some pocket pairs because you are 150BB deep. He could actually be setmining against a very strong range when you are deep.

Why not cbet on flop? I would cbet slightly below 1/2 pot, he can still have a lot of AK which is does not fold to one bet. And you dont get any extra value out of hands like TT or QQ anyway. He should be aware that this flop hits you quite well. But I dont think we have 3 streets of value here so I would play this with a potcontrol line - cbet flop, check back turn and call river.

But maybe the delayed cbet is not a bad option either on such a dry flop. The river raise is a clear fold to me. I dont play on NL16 but I dont think people are generally gonna be able to do these huge river bluffs often enough? Especially 150BB deep. He could have definitely slowplayed KK or JJ like this, or maybe even 77 since you checked flop. We still have only a pair and by calling river we would be just bluffcatching against a rather tighter reg.

I just wonder what is the reasoning behind 3betting the tight player at UTG to 11 BB. Also, what is with your postflop sizings, they make little to no sense, considering both your ranges.

No, right?

Both the check and the 1/3 bet on the flop seem correct to me on this flop.

The turn having the blocker of Ah i will bet to 3/4.
If the villain shoves, you discount the majority of his Fds , therefore his line is more value than bluff.
If it only calls you, you can check on the river.

And if one h comes out, I could consider going there with the Ah blocker

buuuut ...

Played the way you played it ......
On the river you should ask yourself some questions.

What hands for value does the villain shove? JJ KK KJs; 66.
He Shoves AK / AA for value?

In this spot, does this type of rival have lanterns or is he able to perform them while deep?

Sorry for my inglish :)

So maybe I am out of touch with the game a bit as last time I grinded was a couple of years ago and restarted lately but how is a flop check ok and then a 1/3 turn bet ok?
Hero is showing weakness towards villain, vs a thinking player you may even induce bluffs (maybe not in this hand but just in general). 1/3 bet is too weak in my opinion or am I really out of touch with the game and this is standard now and works? If I am please let me know so I can adjust :)

Why can't we play as standard with bet flop and bet/fold turn? How come we do not think villain may have AK or QQ here to pay us on the flop?
I'd even prefer a bet flop, check check turn, call river potentially depending on how strong villain bet is or just check behind as this would be a pot control line for way ahead/way behind kind of situation.

OP why do you bet the river if that's a blank and you were scared of the flop? What has changed in the hand for you to now think a big bet is ok?

Hope not too many questions, am trying to understand these new lines I did not see a couple of years ago. Thanks.

@Fanko

I think the preflop 3bet size was a mistake because I do 9BB. I think I misclicked the shortcut button on table.

Yeah, my river bet size is BIG because I got greedy for value at the last minute, I can see the reason behind it is pretty thin.

I felt like he convinced me to go for value at the last minute, like I messed up on flop or/and turn....

Yeah, he could realistically blow me off AA here because my range seems super capped by river.

Ah ok got it.

Some hands if we start to misplay them we can't make up for it I think in terms of value as it leads to tough or bad situations.

I read something once that stayed with me, maybe am paraphrasing but :
It's better to win small pots than to loose big ones

As long as we learn all good :)
