Huge raise, fold or play?

I cannot imagine a hand that you beat that would play like that.

As far as I can tell, you played the hand well.

There are a lot of hands that could overbet the pot here: AK as you mentioned, but also KK, QJ KJ 44 and maybe some bluffs, but without reads, you pretty much must fold.

What are you trying to achieve by min 3/betting AQ off from the small blind preflop?

In my experience, 4x open is either very strong or a fish.
9 handed I would just call preflop, although fold is probably fine as well.

If you like to raise, raise more.

As played, flop sizing could be smaller and turn bet/fold is fine.

When I first started to play NLHE online, 4x was the standard opening raise size advised in most beginner strategy articles.
Even the "How to play before the flop" Big-Stack Strategy article on PokerStrategy.com still has the recommendation. Considering the tight opening ranges suggested for beginners, it might still be not a bad idea.

The rationale is that this reduces the pot odds for subsequent players.

I'm a bit surprised to see 4x opening raise size on PokerStars -- but I don't play hold'em there hardly ever.
On GGPoker though, I see it frequently, esp from UTG and the blinds.

It does show strength, and it also reflects the fact that on GGPoker so many players are calling far too widely.
