Villain: 50/4 decent sample

Ace high medium drawy flop still favors my range as PFA.
I guess this is a 1/3 pot range cbet, but not absolutely sure. 77 need protection and there is a FD after all. Maybe should have bet bigger.

Also not sure about checking back turn. The run out is a brick. My hand is still vulnerable but there is only one more street to come.
As played can I call OTR? I need to win 25% of the time. Villains range is very wide. Could have worse pockets as well as air.
MDF is 33%. Is 77 in the top 33% of my range. Hard to say, but I would think so.

Does the fact that villain is a loose passive fish change anything?

Against a loose passive villain i would go for at least a half pot Cbet for value and protection on the flop. River is nasty. Villain needs to have a bluff range and without this info I would just give up. You beat only a bluff.

this is all you need to know. so why dont you do the next step and answer that question yourself using equilab or the like. if your unsure about the results, or the process, post your questions and results here. this is how you make progress.

This is my default BU opening range:

22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J5s+, T6s+, 96s+, 85s+, 74s+, 64s+, 53s+, 43s, A2o+, K7o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T8o+, 98o, 87o

On the 2:d A:h 4:h I cbet 100%. (Not sure if that is correct, though)

Here is the range I end up with OTR. Because I checked behind on the turn I excluded all the hands that I would bet with OTT especially the flush draws:

KK-55, 33, KdQd, KsQs, KcQc, KdJd, KsJs, KcJc, QdJd, QsJs, QcJc, KdTd, KsTs, KcTc, QdTd, QsTs, QcTc, JdTd, JsTs, JcTc, Kd9d, Ks9s, Kc9c, Qd9d, Qs9s, Qc9c, Jd9d, Js9s, Jc9c, Td9d, Ts9s, Tc9c, Kd8d, Ks8s, Kc8c, Qd8d, Qs8s, Qc8c, Jd8d, Js8s, Jc8c, Td8d, Ts8s, Tc8c, 9d8d, 9s8s, 9c8c, Kd7d, Ks7s, Kc7c, Qd7d, Qs7s, Qc7c, Jd7d, Js7s, Jc7c, Td7d, Ts7s, Tc7c, 9d7d, 9s7s, 9c7c, 8d7d, 8s7s, 8c7c, Kd6d, Ks6s, Kc6c, Qd6d, Qs6s, Qc6c, Jd6d, Js6s, Jc6c, Td6d, Ts6s, Tc6c, 9d6d, 9s6s, 9c6c, 8d6d, 8s6s, 8c6c, 7d6d, 7s6s, 7c6c, Kd5d, Ks5s, Kc5c, Qd5d, Qs5s, Qc5c, Jd5d, Js5s, Jc5c, 8d5d, 8s5s, 8c5c, 7d5d, 7s5s, 7c5c, 6d5d, 6s5s, 6c5c, Kd3d, Ks3s, Kc3c, Qd3d, Qs3s, Qc3c, K7o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T8o+, 98o, 87o

(348 combos)
33% of 348 ~114 combos.
Here are the best 114 combos:

KK-99, 8d8h, 8d8s, 8d8c, KdTd, KsTs, KcTc, QdTd, QsTs, QcTc, JdTd, JsTs, JcTc, Td9d, Ts9s, Tc9c, Td8d, Ts8s, Tc8c, Td7d, Ts7s, Tc7c, Td6d, Ts6s, Tc6c, KTo, QTo, JTo, T8o+

77 is not in it, so it is a fold. But it's really close.
I am not 100% sure if this is how I am supposed to do this calculation. I think I have seen W34z3l do something similar.
Did I get it about right?

Also, assuming this is all correct. Did I make a huge mistake by calling? I would say, yes.

The term minimum defense frequency is actually misleading, right? Isn't it rather the exact frequency that we should defend with. If we defend wider than the MDF we would lose as well, right? As this hand is an example of.

you should have a flush draw in any of your lines. so your range on the river should be somewhat stronger, making 77 a very clear fold.
well done!

this is a good question, that i do not have an exact answer to. as far as i know, the solver is often defending more than it has to OTF and OTT. the more hands you defend, the more equity you realize. if that also applies OTR i do not know.

Yes, makes sense. I do not bet with all of my possible flush draws OTT 100% of the time. So I still have some flushes in this hand on the river.

one more thing :

you should designate the river calling range and write it in your playbook. :f_drink:

Dont think this way. What are his bluffs? Many hands like JT, Q7, 98s will fold on flop to any sizing. He has a lot of Ax, 4x also beats you, same thing with flushdraws. We can argue about calling there with Tx, but 77 is probably way too low in your range to consider calling. If you feel obliged to call 77 without flush blocker there then it means you should rethink your strategy.

Hands against which you get protection should fold to 1/3 so why bet bigger?
