My name is Jon - I am a 36 year old loving husband, and father who also happens to have made a career out of playing professional poker.
My journey in the world of poker began when I was just a teenager. If you would have asked me whether I thought I was a good poker player when I was 19, I would have probably told you I was the best! That’s the confidence that pushed me to continue playing the game, but looking back in time, I was actually not very good. It’s easy to remember the good, while trying to forget the bad. Sure, I won some games, but I definitely lost a bunch of them too. That’s a part of the learning process.
I continued to play poker regularly throughout the years, and just a year and a half ago, I got the opportunity to turn my favorite hobby into a career. As a former Artillery Officer in the Canadian Army, I had a chance to take nine months off from work for paternity leave when my third child was born. I took this as a blessing in disguise. Little did I know, I would successfully turn it into a profitable career just a few months later.
Leaving my professional career in the Army was a tough decision, if I’m being honest. After discussing this extensively with my wife, we agreed to have me leave my stable job, earning over CA$100,000 to pursue this opportunity. In return, I promised our family that I would do anything it took to continue supporting us financially.
Fast forward to May of 2021 - poker is now our main source of income.
The more involved I become in the online world of poker, the more I wish it had a sense of community. I am a people person, and believe in sharing information and creating conversations. This is my main reason for starting this blog - I want to meet more people who share similar interests, and create a space where we can openly discuss topics related to poker, and life. While it’s easy to find blogs detailing the success stories of high achieving players, you don’t often hear much about their background story. While strategy and tournaments are interesting topics to read about, there is a part missing to all of this which is the people themselves.
To me, it’s equally important to share the highs and the lows in your path to success. Learning about the struggles of the past makes the successes of the present that much more impressive and admirable. My intent for this blog is to detail my journey, including the good, the bad, and everything in between. I plan to share my routines, the content I'm studying to improve my strategies, and share what has worked in my favor in each game.
I want to share the real side of poker, because it’s not always glitz, glamour, and cash. The process is an important aspect, and without all the hard work, there would be no success.
