Since the question is how do you play this hand, I would answer: I CBet the flop.
AQo on an A-high rainbow board is strong enough and can get called by lots worse.
By checking the the flop you give opponent the ability to take the initiative

I'm interested to see what others think though

3betting pre-flop seems fine, but I don't think it's to bad to just call pre-flop and keep the pot small out of position. It depends a little bit if villain is aggressive or tight pre-flop and fold a lot on 3bets or not.

Flop would be a standard Cbet with top pair 2nd kicker. It seems not to likely villain will call a 3bet to often with AK and 88 and 99 seems not to likely ether. As played the river is a really nasty spot against the over shove, but you can't really call or you have reads villain can over play a hand like AJ.
