Winamax - €0.50 PL Hi (6 max) - Omaha Hi - 5 players

BTN: 59.1 BB
SB: 67.16 BB
Hero (BB): 100 BB
UTG: 149.68 BB
CO: 30.9 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has J♥ K♠ A♥ Q♦

fold, CO raises to 3.5 BB, fold, SB raises to 11.5 BB, Hero calls 10.5 BB, CO calls 8 BB

Flop: (34.5 BB, 3 players) 2♦ 4♥ 3♦
SB bets 34.5 BB, fold, fold

SB wins 67.02 BB

My question is about preflop action. I decided to flat with this hand in BB after CO open and SB 3Bet. I belive this hand is too strong to be fold, but maybe I'm wrong ? Would you 4b - fold ? just fold ? :f_ugly:

As a general rule you almost never want to overcall a 3bet in any situation, especially when you (or your opponents) are not deepstacked. If you know that SB is a maniac when it comes to 3betting or that he overfolds a lot to 4bets ship it, otherwise just fold

The 3Better is 42/21/8 (only on 53 hands). It doesn't look so crazy. The original raiser is 69/6/7 (on 53 hands too), so his range is quite strong.
I think it might be bettter to fold, but I admit that it hurts a bit to fold AKQJss.

I imagine you would always 4 better if it was double suited, right? And in this case, we go all-in vs 5b (pot commited, my opponents here are quite short stacked). What about 100bb deep or more? I don't think we would ever give up AKQJds preflop, even if we are almost always up against AAxx ... :f_rolleyes:

AKQJds might still be a fold. It depends on the opponents. It is close here. Against a 10% 3bettingrange you are flipping (maybe slightly behind) and need to pay the rake BUT with the additional risk of BU waking up with AA 4betting AKQJds is -ev in total.
Solver might tell you otherwise but it assumes wider ranges and people folding more to 4bets than they actually do

AKss - fold to SB 3B, you are blocking K and you want for opponet he would have more K-cards for his 3B.
AKQJds - 4B to SB 3B, DS is more potentional hand.

Could you elaborate more on why we never overcall a 3b in any situation please?

You need to invest lot of bbs to call and you dont close the action are main issues. Your range also very rarely has AAxx so it will cap your range as well. So e.g. lets say CO open, BU 3bet and BB cold call. If CO thinks BU is 3betting wide he can potentially 4bet fairly wide to put ton of pressure. Even more so if 3bettor is SB as SB flat range to open raise should be very small. Then of course open raiser or potential flat callers get pretty nice pot odds to come along and often be in position to cold caller. Plus there will be lot of rake payed as bonus especially in low stake.

Ok so 4b or fold is it then?
What about being deepstacked? We generally want to call more 3b being deepstacked cause our opponents can't get us off a hand easily and stack off profitably. Is there ever a case for overcalling being let's say ~200bb deep as well as our opponent?

Versus these stacksizes (CO 31 blinds, SB 69 blinds) in a 5-handed game, I am more than happy to 4-bet this hand get it in pre-flop.

Versus deeper stacks and 6-handed it would be more difficult

Pretty much what ghaleon wrote. On top of that monker preflop solutions don't overcall a lot of 3bets. Most of the spots less than 1%. If everybody is deep that might change a little but even then it won't be much

To make it simple, we have 3 ways to gain an edge in a poker hand. Edge means that our chance of winning the hand is bigger than opponent's. If our edge over the player pool in the long run is more than rake paid, we make profits.

Three ways to gain an edge, and therefore a reason to play a hand:
1) skill edge: our strategy is better than opponent's
2) range edge: our hand/range is stronger than opponent's
3) positional edge: we have position

He if SB has AA, your 4bet is not profitable. If SB has 8% 3bet and you go 3ways, it's breakeven. Calling is not profitable, as you need to fold postflop too much, and sometimes get it in with lowest equity.

I know it sucks to fold good looking hands, but numbers don't lie.

When we are cold calling 3bets, none of those are true. We usually don't have position, SPR is low so we don't have skill edge (it's all about who hits the flop and whom not) and our hand isn't ahead of opponent's range (if it was, we would 4bet).

Stacks are not important here, their ranges are. CO has tight opening range, and SB has 3bet so far probably once or twice. If you haven't seen what he has 3bet with, you have to assume it's AA/AKK heavy. Especially when he raises against short stack.
