Just downloaded and installed Poker Tracker 2 and the patch.
What does the patch do? Do I still have to purchase the software to use it permanently? I thought the patch would fix that.

Paying for software is what allows you to use it permanently. The fact that it is not free is not a bug! 
Ah ok maybe was a stupid question.
What about Table tracker in the software? Seems like I have to pay monthly to use it.
Is it very useful?

Some kind of table selection is very important. While you are still learning and playing micro stakes I don't think it's that important. Once you start playing short-handed you pretty much can't live without it.
