The topic of today’s instructional sample hand is the freeplay on the flop. Often you are on the flop with marginal hands like top pair with weak kicker.

NL 100 ($0.50/$1.00)

Stack sizes:
UTG: $106.05
UTG+1: $58.30
MP1: $20.85
MP2: $95.50
MP3: $108.75
CO: $110
Button: $94.50
SB: $41.50
Hero: $20.00

Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is BB with 9  K
2 folds, MP1 calls, 4 folds, SB calls, Hero checks.

Flop: ($3.00) K :spade: 5 :diamond: 7 :club: (3 players)
SB bets $2, Hero ???

If we stick to the strategy I know (not to invest any money if your not flopped at least Top Pair with King or Ace as a Kicker), besides the 2/3 Potbet here OOP from the SB into 3 people is pretty strong in my eyes.

Fold, no question.

I have no clue. ^^

In limit I raise him and calldown to more action but I know that NL players fear even a backdoorstraight so it might be wrong to bet 6$ here. Anyway that's my choice. ^^

I think that I even fold even KJ here. K9 should be auto fold

I almost always fold in that spot. With a board like this what can he lead with if he's not maniac? A call is not a option for me but a raise to 6$ might be good against some opponent.

I'd bet $4 because he might be bluffing or hoping for straight (assuming that if he had KT-AK he would have raised a bit preflop) , but if he overbets, calls or bets on turn then we might be behind (2 pairs, top pair better kicker etc.). But as I'm reading other posts I guess I'm wrong :)

i think i would call and fold to a raise from MP guy , or to another bet on turn if i dont improve. Shouldnt be too bad of a play considering we have position on the SB. He will usually not bet again on the turn unless he has a better hand than ours.
I think the reason for folding everything on unraised pots but TPTK with the SSS is for simplicity reasons , to avoid difficult situations in post flop play. But as you develop your game and become better with postflop skills , you can get more involved in such situations.
However vs 3 opponents i would still check/fold this.

56% of you voted correctly: fold

Since Hero is sitting between two opponents and doesn’t know how good his hand (top pair middle kicker) is, he should fold. If we would go on with the hand it will end in an all-in with the SB who won’t fold because of his stack size. Maybe also MP1 hits something so we don’t know what we are up against. In situations like this we would win small pots and lose big pots.

Good luck at the tables!
