Pretty tame day yesterday. Slept till about 4pm Australian time then got up and messed around online (god I run awful at 2-7 triple draw and at razz). Went and had dinner with Simon aka durrrrkiller at Saffron, a very nice Indian restaurant near where we live. Got home and played a small session online on full tilt. It seems that Red pros are not only lucky, but their luck is contagious. Graph below of 1/2 Rush NL (FR).

Ended up being way too tired today to play day 1a of ANZPT Gold Coast. So I'm just going to play day 1b tomorrow. Simon is playing today though, so wish him luck! (I think he runs OK at live tournaments as it is ).

Damn i'm interested for a visit to Aus/NZ

I run awful. Busted obv, nearly a full 3 levels into day 1 (3 hours, or roughly 60 hands ). We started with 200 big blinds. Didn't really play too many interesting hands, although had 1 or 2 fairly close spots where I called down against a polarised range and obviously got shown the nuts.

Table was extremely soft which makes it even worse, but it was a loose/lagtardish sort of soft, rather than a tight/passive/nitty/callstationy table (which I personally love more because you don't need to make hands: you just need to pretend to look at your hand and bet based on the board). Still tilting when you're by far the best player on the table and bust out. Oh well, such is tournament poker. Am pretty happy with how I played and that's what's important. Swapped 10% with a very good player who's doing quite well ATM too which is nice.

Next tournament is in roughly 8 days in Melbourne. Hopefully I run better.

It's quite sunny at the moment outside which makes it tempting, but I almost died stepping out onto the balcony as a result of the ridiculously strong winds outside.

Went to dreamworld but forgot to take any pics (doh). It was fun though. not quite as fun as it was when i was 14 but o well. Probably gonna go to a new theme park here called WhiteWater World tomorrow (which incidentally is my last day in the Gold Coast). Should be fun, and it's always nice to have a short, relaxing break before playing a big-ish tournament series. Planning on playing a ton of the tournaments at Vic Champs actually, including all the omaha ones as well as an 8-game tournament (should be funny playing stud with people who don't know the rules).

In Melbourne now! God it's cold here! Stepped off the plane at midnight into something like 5°C weather wearing the same clothes I'd worn in the Gold Coast, d'oh.

Second day pretty much consisted of getting up really really late, meeting up with my staker at my apartment and heading to the casino cause we had nothing else to do (someone suggest some touristy stuff in Melbourne!) I took some photos but on second thought they're pretty damn awful so I won't bother posting them. The casino (and especially the poker room) is really nice though so thumbs up to them for that.

Simon Watt and I then registered for the teams event even though he's a huge fish at live tournaments. It was only 200AUD buyin (214 teams running) though so we just decided to drink a ton and play only semi-seriously (although I personally don't feel I play any worse when drunk). Sobered up as we neared the final table though, and ended up coming 2nd (after having made a very +cEV deal in the heads-up). As true testament to our competitive nature, we were both very disappointed in the result, heh.

Couple memorable hands in the tournament I guess. One where I openraise KQs on the button with 15 people left to go in the tournament. I had 25bb effective I believe at blinds of 2k/4k. SB folds and BB calls. Flop comes 322 rainbow (no backdoor flushdraw for me). I had a very loose aggressive image at this point and BB seemed somewhat competent (as far as live players go) so I felt that my opponent will not just flat most Ax hands to my minraise. As a result I have the near nuts on this board. Anyway villain checks and I check behind.

Turn is a 9 bringing a backdoor flushdraw and he bets 16k into 18k. I call, which is obviously the best line here given my reasoning on the flop.

River is an offsuit T and he bets 25k into 50k. He had about 45k behind. I feel this card is kind of scary because if he rivered a pair he'd be confident enough to bet it always. If the river was something like a 7 meanwhile, he'd be afraid I had the 9 and thus check. I had to also consider if he was "bluffing" with ace high. I decided he was polarised enough however, and ended up making the call. He says "good call, ace high is good", to which I smiled and tabled/said "king high". He felt pretty owned :P.

Heads up we had a couple cool hands. My opponent (remember this is a teams event) was very loose, so I took advantage of that by making some fairly thin valuebets, and some big overbets. One spot I minraise 8d7s, and 3barrel a K :diamond:34 :diamond:5 :diamond:6 board. Turn was close. I wanted him to fold all his second pair hands but it's dangerous because lots of them make 2pair type hands. On the river I was like "station gon' pay me off" and valuebet my 8 high flush for like 2/3 pot which he quickly called. Also backdoored a straight against my opponent, and overbet 2x pot on the river on a 4straight board. <3 live poker.

Unfortunately Simon didn't run as hot. He ended up doubling them with Q4s < AKo all in pre, and then paying off a turn check/raise with A8o on a A94sJs board. Both hands were extremely standard given stacksizes IMO, although there were some live tells that his opponent had that Simon missed out on.

Second always sucks anyway.. but we came away with 7k AUD for our efforts (3.5k each)

You might like to cross-reference this remark against what you wrote in my blog. Mind you, I feel the same about chess!

For some touristy stuff in Melbourne, go for a walk across the bridge on Flinders St, and up towards the parkland. Check out the war memorial, and climb to the top of that. Great view of the boulevarde back to the city and away toward the beach.

Stay around the gardens there, and check out the botanic gardens, you can have lunch there and feed swans.

National Gallery of Victoria is across the road there if culture is your thing, and at the moment the Tim Burton retrospective is on at ACMI, which is on Fed square. They have the batmobile there.

Brunswick St and Smith St in Fitzroy for the cafe society and interesting nooks, street art, and the Melb Chess Club is in Leicester St off Brunswick St, but probably not open during the day. In Brunswick St go to Bimbos for lunch, and have $6 pizzas.

Street art is famous in the city, so ask around for some of the lanes if you are interested in that.

That should give you plenty to start with.

cause i'm 21 and have the attention span of a goldfish none of those things are especially appealing. i think that while i have the capacity and the education/upbringing to appreciate culture i just wouldn't enjoy it so much. fine dining is about all i can handle
