I recently received plantium status, even though I only gained 1700 point in my best 28-day run. Where's the trick?

No we don't do that! You get double StrategyPoints on PokerStars and thats the reason why you are Platinum. Congratulations by the way.
On this page you can see the extra points on right in the category "Special Bonuses"
