Hm. Maybe I'll try that. I tend to play with scared money a bit but I guess I'll always do that, so adapting sooner is better.

Okay. I'll try some NL25 today. I'll probably only play 6ish tables to start with. See how that goes.

Okay. Played my first 500 hands, 6 tables at a time, of NL25. Couldn't connect with absolutely anything whatsoever. Players seem a little bit more aggressive though. I won a stack fairly early when I flopped a set vs AA, and then another when I won a flip QQ vs AK (vs A3 who had roughly 15BB).

Then I lost a stack with JJ vs AA against a very aggressive opponent on the button, and 2/3 stack TT vs AK. All the while I was bleeding chips set mining, playing suited connectors on the button and not hitting pairs with my big aces. Regained 2/3 stack later when my 75s on the bb flopped a monster draw and I hit my straight on the river.

Net result is that I'm down $2.30. Hopefully I'll play some more later today.

Played 9 tables this time. After just 631 hands I'm up a very healthy $89.12, running at 28.25BB/100. Obviously I'm on a pretty sick heater but I genuinely feel that I can crush this limit as I am playing at current. The bulk of my winnings came from 2 hands, AA vs 52dd on AQ7dd and 44 vs AKhh on K64hh.

Hoped to get in a longer session than usual, but my internet started disconnecting so I figured I would stop. Would have been up $30 had it not been for random fish who decided his flush draw was the nuts and beat my AA. ON THE LAST HAND :(

Instead I'm up $4.04. At least I made a profit I guess...

Seems like you had a pretty good NL25 session.Out of interest, are you playing FR or SH?

30 BI is fine for fullring up to NL100.

And 19/14 is really laggy for fullring standards, especially at micros. If you can pull off such a style at NL10, I would say great job

Hey guys, didn't play during the weekend because I was busy socialising or something worthless like that. I made enough money during the last week to become "eccentric" with my spending which is hugely -EV so I'll try to avoid that next time...

Anyway, I played 1000 hands so far today and am up $57.80 along with $20 of my bonus cleared. It clears much faster at this limit, which is of course not surprising.

My volume is seriously slipping. I think I attribute that so far to scared money. I seem to tilt a lot more easily when I get some sort of bad beat at this limit and therefore I stop my sessions short a lot more. Today I lost 2 stacks, a 3bet K97r pot with AA to 97s and a raised AJ5r pot with A5 to AQ within a minute, and pretty much immediately started sitting out.

Will play some more right now.

CURRENT BANKROLL: $1180.95

Another 900 hands later and my full tilt starts to disconnect yet again. I figured out it is entirely full tilt's fault as my internet is exactly the same and I even ran a speedtest/pingtest to make sure there were no significant changes from that point to any other time of day, and there weren't. So I'm going to have to e-mail support or ask around a bit.

$60.89 was the result of my last session. That plus the ~$80 I made earlier puts me at $140 for the day after 3 hours of play. I'm pretty damn happy with that, even though it still feels a bit upswingy (except for losing KK vs AK for 150bb wheeeeeeee). Also less than $1 away from my next bonus.

So far I'm running at 11.85ptBB/100 at NL25 over 3.5k hands ([ ] sample size) and 9.68ptBB/100 at NL10 and NL25 over 22k hands ([X] sample size, I guess). Needless to say I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I will get an early night and try put in some serious volume tomorrow. Exam on thursday and saturday so I won't be able to play from about wednesday onwards. But after that I'm into GRINDMODE!

I decided today to wake up fairly early in order to get a full day of playing in before I had to start studying for exams.

Little did I know that I would run extremely badly and lose more than 3 stacks in less than 700 hands. I felt tilt surging through my body so I stopped playing and started watching training videos instead before lunch.

I then decided to play some MTTs to cool off some of my tilt. 90man $6.60 KO's seemed like a good place to start.

I played several of these (6), only cashed in 1 for 5th earning $36 plus $11 for KO's. I then played in the Midnight Madness and had a horrible run of cards and zero respect, as the only 3 pots I opened during the first 10 orbits got either 3bet or checkraised on my cbet. So I eventually bubbled.

Started playing a $5.50 cashout tournament (which I probably will never do again, I hate the idea of them since I've played it). Then I kept playing it, and kept playing it, and kept playing it, until I busted 5th with AQo vs 98o for $251.92 in total.

So with that lucky cash under my belt I finish up for the day yet again. :)

CURRENT BANKROLL: $1402.60

I won't be playing till at least Saturday as I have an exam both Thursday and Saturday.

Well, first day back since exams finished and I'm down just over $40. AIEV was well above $0 but I guess the downswing was eventual.

I think maybe I should do a lot more study than playing at the moment. I feel as though I have nowhere near the experience everyone else does at my limit.

hey man im in similar position to you, just moved to nl25 after beating nl10, seems like ur doing well.

u play on stars at all?

i wouldnt worry about Allin Ev, AT ALL. i used to check it after every session till i saw my monsterdraw with soemthing like 60% equity ended up as -25 ev after AI flop probably cos my hand wasnt made yet. also, i notice sometimes things like AK v TT ur equity is -25 and shit like that... so yeah... dont think its all that accurate

It just counts what % of the money in the pot belong to you equity wise. Even if you shove AA vs. 72o preflop for let's say 10$ total, only 8,82$ belong to you, so you're running just from that hand 1.18$ above EV.

That said, I agree that we shouldn't care about EV at all. Instead just go through the hands and if you believe you played them correctly, move on ^^

The thing you should be looking at are the so called G bucks, which are basically the EV of your hand against the range of hands your opponent is playing at that spot

I used to play on Stars, but I moved to FT for RB and the fact that their FR games were supposedly softer (and rush enticed me a bit too). I'm thinking about learning some SH or maybe even HU though. The video's I've seen have all said that playing HU is very, very helpful for whatever cash game you're playing. So maybe I'll give that a go.

And AIEV is really just me trying to make myself feel better. But even with it I'm not sure how well I'm playing right now. Practically zero sample size so who knows? At least I've got 50 BI for this limit.

Esco, you playing FR NL25 at Stars then? How long ago did you move up? Maybe we should sweat each other...?

Apparently I'm over my "downswing", as I'm up $67.60 after 1987 hands today, as well as another $20 of my bonus cleared, and $23ish in RB. I feel as though during my losing "period" I was playing differently to when I was winning, and to now. I was playing scared almost, and now that I'm used to the stakes I'm confident I can continue to win. Time to put in some SERIOUS volume, starting with maybe tomorrow (I've got a friend coming round for me to sweat at NL5, we'll see how that goes as me being the teacher :))

Oh yeah and I cashed out $100 and spent it on alcohol. Wicked.

WOW. What the hell.

My sweat session went fairly well, he was actually playing NL10 and he ended up 10ptBB/100 over 1.5k hands. I felt he played well, if a bit weak and lacking aggression, particularly postflop.

Then I decided to play a "late-night" session starting from 9pm. Poker gods punished me severely. I don't like how badly I'm running at the limit I'm supposedly taking shots at. Not only am I getting turn'd and river'd a hell of a lot but I'm also $140 below AIEV. Ended the session down 3 stacks. Some highlights:

QQ vs 44, lost
TT vs 22, lost
KK vs AA 3-handed, lost
set-under-set, lost
top set vs gutshot on turn, lost
middle set vs flush draw on turn, lost

WHOO HOO. I don't think I tilted very much (until TT vs 22 where I immediately closed down all my tables), which is sort of a victory, I guess. Had I not value towned numerous fish I would have been down a fuckload more.

Am probably cashing out another $100 too so I'm going to have to get my grind on.

OH MY FUCKING GOD.

Started the session fairly early, deciding to get my grind on. About 100 hands in I notice one player has been 3betting me quite recently - in fact, checking back I've noticed the last 4 times I've raised he has 3bet me. I pick up AKo and raise, and it happens again. Great, I can catch his bluff finally, 4bet with the intention of calling. It happens, and he shows AA. No problem, pretty unlucky of me but whatever, that's just one stack.

Another 200 hands later and I've noticed I can't catch cards - QQ-TT flop 2 overcards regularly, I haven't paired my overcards yet, no sets, no draws, whatever. Down a little bit, but no problem. I pick up AA on the btn, UTG+1 raises and MP2 3bets. Pretty perfect for me, I 4bet, UTG+1 flats and MP2 folds. Flop comes K62r, villain checks, I bet, he minshoves, I quickly call and he shows 22. Excellent. I'm a little bit annoyed at present.

After a bit more bullshit (70 hands on one table, I had raised 3 of those 70 hands and got 3bet all 3 times, never had anything) I pick up AQdd on the btn, and a guy from MP2 raises. I flat and everyone else folds. Flop comes J82ss. He bets and I decide to float. Turn comes a Ts and he barrels again. I raise to 3.5x his bet and he calls. River 5r and I shove over his check. He instacalls and shows A8o. Okay, what the fuck is going on?

Nearing the 1k hand mark and I pick up 55 at CO, with an MP1 raiser and an MP2 flat. I call as well and flop comes AQ5r. OMG I HIT A SET! MP1 bets, MP2 folds and I smooth call. Turn comes a 8d bringing a flush draw. MP1 bets again, I raise and call his shove. He shows KT and hits a J on the river.

I'm so fucking done.

Hello valued readers... who am I kidding, nobody reads this blog.

You may have noticed the title of my blog has now changed to Lifetilt. I recently took a week and a bit off poker to get my life sorted, but i'm running way below EV.

For about 5 years now I've been self-diagnosed with increasingly severe depression. Originally I had this idea that poker could possibly pay for therapy and was considering cashing out all of a certain amount as soon as I reached it but obviously I got hooked, to the point where it became my only light in an otherwise bleak life. Once the downswing hit I felt absolutely awful - it was as if I had lost the only thing that kept me going anymore. At the end of my last session I was scared at how much I was tilting. I'm normally a very conservative, quiet person, and here I was throwing chairs across the room. Eventually I calmed down and decided to stop playing for a bit. So I started my social-life break.

For a while I thought it was going well. But variance soon hit, and after being broken up with this morning (tomorrow being my birthday, obviously), I took a lot of time to reflect on just about everything. I realized poker and uni were really all I had to work towards. I realized that this might even be a good thing, and that I could finally have the required motivation to pull myself through whatever the poker gods could throw at me.

Uni starts back in a week but I'm full of determination to continually work on my game and pull myself through this neverending life downswing.

I know almost exactly what you are going through. And I don't envy you at all. Playing a game that beats up both ends of your emotional range, whilst you are enjoying the bottom of that range outside of poker is a great way of setting yourself up for hyper mega tilt.

Having said this, if you can isolate the emotions you experience from poker variance and playing leaks for what they are, there is actually a benefit for your RL emotional variance, as it can help you deal with those swings IMO.

Not a fun road to travel fella, but I wish you well. Don't forget to study the arse off it and play each hand better than the last.

Thanks. I've been trying to look at silver linings in recent years, and yours is one I missed. One or the other I can handle but both at the same time is a difficult affair. Just have to count my blessings and move on.

Also, I'm 19 now! Whoo!

Mate, at 19 I was a mess. It gets better, then it gets worse, then it gets better. Life variance is something we have to get used to unfortunately. Go hard fella!
