So, after probably 35 hours listening, I finally finished Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene audiobook. It's a pretty marvellous piece of work and I can well understand the mix of awe and controversial distrust that greeted its arrival on the scientific scene in the 70s. I found it jaw droppingly compelling for the most part.

The book is only 15 hours, but as a sleep aid, I had to keep re listening to the same bits over and over before they stuck!

Summary: we and all other living creatures are merely the vehicles or "survival machines" for the successful propagation of our genes. The genes themselves are replicators, or copying units. Natural selection is the means by which mutations or copying errors in the genes are promoted, in evolutionary terms.

So, there you go: I just saved you 15 hours. ♦

You need to read Darwin's Dangerous Idea now. Applies the same principles to just about everything.

No, I've earned myself a break from hard science. Hitting Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho now. Will be my third reading but it's working well as an audio book, so far. Not many more shockingly hilarious novels out there, imo.

Loved the movie, and I love reading... but this book was just sooooo... ummmm excessive in describing every fine detail.... which is kinda the point I guess but it drove me crazy reading it... I couldn't finish it. Only got a few chapters in.

Now J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye is mandatory reading every 3 or 4 years...

Yeah, Catcher is a fine book. Perhaps I will revisit it before too long.

Your comment about the level of detail in AP is illuminating. It hadn't previously occurred to me that we have to see the graphic depictions of violence (much of it disturbing sexual violence) as part of the author's overall intention to "kill with detail".

And I suppose one can't usefully distinguish between Bateman's obsessive focus on every little detail of consumption: couture, home furnishings, music, and late 80s Hi Fi technology etc. and his descent into violent psychosis.

I have just learned that a musical version recently opened in London. Not quite My Fair Lady...

Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene is awesome. I studied genetics at Uni a few years back and there a couple of books by Steve Jones that are also also amazing (In the Blood, for example)

Everything seemed to come together well this month. My students took a good number of hours at coaching and the staking also continued well, with a three new additions to the fold. All the guys are working hard and showing continued improvement. I've added a couple of hypers guys as well (having told myself I wouldn't dabble) and so the knowlege base is increasing nicely!

As to my own play, volume is getting lower and lower as I branch out from playing, but obviously I am delighted with the results for the 30 or so hours I did put in. About half the volume was in a hyper turbos where I ran pretty badly, with EV ROI of 6%, but a slight loss. Fortunately this was more than compensated for by great results in the normal and turbos games. I managed to wipe $1.8K off my $200 6mx losses in only 17 games so the challenge I set myself for this year is looking at least possible.

In other news I have decided to play the UKIPT event in Dublin at the end of February, where I will once again be meeting up with some 6mx sng pals.

I guess that's all. The other day I received my new chair, a photo of which I will probably post in due course. It has a split seat to encourage good posture but it's taking a bit of getting used to!
