Liar Dice - Diary of a Bean Counter!

Did another 3 mile walk today. Earned 1.5 Dog Gauntlet points for a tally of 14/20, so only 6 more to go before it's crispy spicy beef patties, a pint of draught Sun Lik beer, and maybe some Singapore noodles to follow.

All this fresh air must be good for the mind as I pulled out another +$500 day. Two sessions of 8 tables of FR/6mx and two sessions of one tabling HUsngs. Ran around $300 above EV but I'm happy enough with the red line.

Last night Mrs Tim and I sat down to watch one of my Christmas presents: Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman. There's a poker scene in the film in which Newman bluffs his opponent, by raising every street with complete air. Seems like a bunch of today's opponents thought they were... wait for it... Lukealikes. Anyway, it's a classic film which lays much of the ground work for modern interpretations such as Shawshank Redemption and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

Since I've finished for the day, I could watch my other present which is Don't Look Now, a seminal horror film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Mrs Tim is out at choir so it's a perfect opportunity. Only problem is I have a feeling it's going to be pretty scary and it's dark outside and...um...

On second thoughts, maybe I will just watch the final episode of the final series of The Wire instead. I think I can handle that.

Anyone think I should fold river? Main reason for calling is that a. I dont expect any 7x hand to 4b the flop and b. any other hand which 3bet for value now has to be scared I have a 7. But my logic could be off...

If I assume villain is mostly full of it on the flop (cos this is the kind of board it's hard for the preflop raiser to hit hard and therefore ripe for checkraising by opponents) am I better off 3betting as played or just calling? If I call am I folding T/R if diamond hits and calling down otherwise? If he ch/R random overs T/R will be tough in that case...

Interesting hand, Tim. Why is that with the small 4bet on the flop though? He probably doesn't call 45 OOP on a raise, so imo, he is rather bluffing or having 7x, or a FD with 2 overs, maybe Ax with a gutshot. That 4bet probably blocks most of his bluffs. I think I float, double float turn depending betsizing/card. Or maybe you are trying to induce a light 5bet/shove with all his 2 overs?

Turn is standard imo if we plan on bluff catching. Not sure what is better though, half of the deck is bad for us River comes perfect. He never plays 7x like that. 88 goes broke on the flop, 99-AA he probably 3bet pre and it doesn't match with his action so far. I call as well.

I'll write my opinion, though it might be off. I shove flop. You protect your hands from overcards (of which a lot c/r flop and should fold to a shove). If he calls with a draw you're ahead. He'll have a 7 very very rarely.

What do you do if he bets turn when this jack hit? Or if A or K hits?

As played, I bluffcatch this river all day long. He bluffs here way way more than 30%

I think either way it is fine. I'd usually just call flop, but your reasoning for 3betting certaintly makes sense. Calling down w/ AK hi is probably better in this spot than with 66. Don't be afraid to call down on overcards though since value ranges gets way more polarised in c/r'ed hands. If villain does it with JTo fx. and turn is J, he may or may not bet. He is, imo, unlikely to go for all 3 streets though, and therefore you should not be afraid to call down. As played it looks like he has gutshot, overpair or nothing. I would not fold on a diamond as played since his 4b sizing makes no sense with a fd

Actually i think i played a somewhat similar hand a while ago. The primary reason for 3betting the flop is that i didnt know how to proceed by calling, since villain was fairly unknown. Rest is history ♦

I haven't updated in a while so here is a brief summary of the last few days. Yesterday was less than pleasant with a minus $400 day. Unfortunately due to a glitch in the way PP and TNPP talk to each other, I lost some of the functionality for HEM reporting on a few tournaments whereby I don't have the EV winnings for those.

That's all code for: "I don't know exactly how badly I ran". But I definitely ran below EV...

Anyway, really pleased with how my HU game has developed over the past few weeks. Honestly, just before Christmas I was not even beating the $6s. I guess a lot of this was due to being distracted due to stress and pain but things have gone crazy since we moved into 2012 (just after game 700 in the graph):

So I'm now comfortably flitting between $33s and $55s. Seeing some really random play too. You know when you get to showdown and you see your opponent's hand and you just can't work out what might have been going through their head in order for them to think they could have the best hand...

But, actually, I think bluffing less helped. That, and folding marginal hands when passive plyrs start betting into you, even when you can't put them on a hand!

Well, I survived my ramble from Winchcombe to Charlton Abbots. Sadly the number of lithe 19-year-old students majoring in poker massage therapy was the same as that which comes between -1 and 1.

Never mind. The rain kept away, the views of the Cotswold Hills were breathtaking and I managed not to collapse from exhaustion before the restorative cream tea had been consumed.

Yesterday it was my birthday, I hung one more year on the line. I should feel depressed (my life's a mess) but I'm having a good time. - P.Simon

Turned 36 yesterday. In a move generally considered sacrilegious to poker players, I took a day off on a Sunday. It was great. Started with a full English breakfast in the Curious Cafe then went across town to a wine warehouse to spend some of my birthday money.

Mrs Tim64 and I watched the latest episode of the BBC's stunning Sherlock Holmes and then took the little one to the park to play. I made my daughter dinner while getting started on a delicious Yalumba 'Y' Series Viognier (my favourite wine varietal, these days). Then Mrs Tim64 kindly put her to bed while I watched some of the 2011 Aussie Millions heads up cash game between Dwan and Antonius. If you ever want to learn how to fold hands when it seems there is no earthly possibility your opponent could keep getting so lucky on the river, watch Dwan there.

We cooked dinner together while getting stuck into the Viognier: fresh prawns sautéed in garlic and butter on a bed of dressed rocket leaves; sirloin steak with a green peppercorn sauce, home-made french fries and wilted spinach, accompanied by an amazing bottle of Wakefield Estate Merlot from Clare Valley. A quick clear up then the cliffhanger episode of Sherlock Holmes with a Sicilian lemon sorbet followed by cheese board, more of the Merlot and some port. Ahhhhhh...

Just before heading to bet, I checked my email and saw I'd had an e-mail from an old friend. It seems he is really suffering with the stresses of his high-powered job. I really feel for him and hope I can offer some comfort. It makes me ever thankful for escaping when I did. Being 36 isn't so bad if you're doing what you want to be doing.
