Gelfand beat Anand in today's game after a string of draws. Pretty nasty situation for reigning champ now, with only 5 games remaining. Lacklustre play so far but it might get bloody at last with Anand having to win.

Pure Vishy magic today.
In this postion, Gelfand snatched the exchange with 15...Qxf3+ 16. Kc2 and 16...Qxh1. In the commentary room, the GMs were trying to work out if White could build up enough of an attack with 17. Bd3, to compensate for the material disadvantage.
But as usual, Anand had other ideas. He simply played 17. Qf2. Everyone stared at the board for a few moments and then Gelfand resigned. His queen is trapped.
In other news, I took on my first poker student today, OtterlyGood. I had wanted to wait until I was officially a coach on PS.com but then it seemed silly to wait. We've had one session and it went well. Another planned soon.
I was on cooking detail and made a tasty pea risotto with real chicken stock. (#Thechickenstockwasgood). The sun appeared, so we sat outside; all very pleasant. However, I've done virtually no grinding today what with coaching, chess and cooking... Tables beckon.

Well, neither Leko nor Nepomniatchi saw this in the commentary room. This is what Vishy does. Reminds me of this game with Kramnik in WCC:
Long combi ends in this pos. White checks on d7, winning the Black bishop on b7. Seems he's just a pawn up since he can bring his own bishop back to f1 to protect against the Rook check on c-file. But then bang... Ne3!! White must take (to prevent mate) and then nothing can prevent the pawn advancing to e2 and then e1 for a new Queen.

Using ICM Explorer, we can find that we need 74.76% equity vs marginal resteals in order to induce action given the ICM tax. We won't have that equity against any reasteal range (only individual hands such as K2o), therefore we should not be inducing here. (i.e. we should be raise/folding or limping). Note that open folding is probably just bad (even if we think BB reasteals loosely) because we don't give ourselves a chance to pick up SB's remaining chips when gets it in with AJ or w/e.
Now let's flesh that out with some other calculations. Let's make the assumption villain is restealing ATC here. That is the equivalent of our open shoving and getting called by the BB with ATC. SnG Wizard tells us this is bad for us to the tune of -4.80 diff (i.e. we lose 4.8% of a buyin, or $4.80).
However, let's look what happens when we adjust his range so that it's closer to a likely resteal range. Given the hand villain shows up with I think it's reasonable to assume he's not actually re-stealing ATC here. The hand he shows up with (JKs) is one that 'looks nice' and has a decent amount of equity against many hands I might open and blockers to some big hands. So let's give him 20.3%. (Note that reducing this to 13% or so doesn't change the outcome much). Now, the open shove it still bad but it's much less so: -0.47 ($0.47).
Finally, let's change his range yet again, to make it even more realistic by taking out a few of the monster hands we assume aren't in his 35bb+ resteal shove range, i.e. QQ/KK/AA (because we assume he will 3b them normally, for value and to induce).
Then what we see is that the shove is still bad but now it's only -0.14. Now it becomes easier to justify calling it off because we can argue (strongly, imo) that we will recover that $0.14-$0.47 in future game equity vs this opponent, due to our image and his recalled experience of this hand.
Incidentally, from villain's point of view - again in a vacuum - his reasteal is fine if I'm opening 30% here and only calling 2.1% (AKs+). However, if he understands that I should realise I need to tighten up my opening range significantly in this spot in order not to get abused - let's say to something like 10% - then his shove is bad (-0.64).
I think that's enough for now. Tldr: the call off is indeed (immediately) bad but it's not that bad and is probably justifiable from a dynamic/future game equity pov.

I honestly can't give you an hourly for $15s on Stars. I play them as part of sets with many other different buyins at varying speeds and I only have a tiny sample of 285 games. However, for that small sample of normal speed games, I'm running at 13.1% EV ROI.
I just watched this video http://www.pokerstrategy.com/video/23995 and thought of you. It analyses exactly this spot and relates it to a simple model game for which you can do the maths. One conclusion, and I quote here, is 'it depends who has the bigger balls'. Who says maths is dull! Enjoy.

Had a nice talk with Mrs Tim64 on Wednesday. Explained I was frustrated because of the ridiculous amount of time I spend on computer every day for such a small number of "billable hours". Vowed to do something about this over the next few weeks.
Yesterday I managed to get it just right. Grinded a profitable set in the morning, then walked into town to take the girls out for a Chinese lunch, after nipping to the post office to pick up Mrs Tim64's birthday present (in this country if you're not there when the postman comes, they take it back to the depot). After that I went to the mobile phone shop to get a new sim card for my dongle and then walked home through the glorious sunshine. I spent the rest of the afternoon playing with my daughter in the paddling pool. It was absolutely delightful.
Mrs Tim64 put the little one to bed and I did my third and last set of the day to book a solid profit. Then I sat out in the garden with a cold beer to watch the 10th game replay world chess championship. We had a bit of dinner and then watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy, followed by interesting documentary on the Eiger.
Total computer hours were about 4.5, with 3.7 playing hours.

Well done, also, for perservering with the blog. Once I get my propaganda platform (aka video producer) I can lobby PS for the complimentary Victorian reading aid for loyal followers. However, if you've reached page 100 or w/e we're on now, I'd be a bit surprised if the monocle will really improve matters. Maybe a blindfold would be better?
