Luck of the Irish

I played 2700 hands today for a profit of $7. I should have been up $16 according to EV which is a good sign that I'm getting my money in with good equity. I can remember getting rivered 3 times alright, it would have been some session if this didn't happen but anyway.

I didn't play any poker over the weekend and spent Monday nursing a hangover, posting hands and reading some of "Don't Listen to Phil Hellmuth" by Dusty Schmidt. I also read and summarised an article on playing on the turn which was good. I'm hoping to play at least 10,000 hands again this week. I have $45 in my Tell-A-Friend account too and it looks like one of my friends is going to get 500 points soon so I should have $70 when he gets there. It will be a very nice bonus. I might withdraw it to my Skrill account and then lodge it on Party so I can get some sort of bonus for it.

I placed a few bets at the weekend that didn't come off but that horse I mentioned above won at 7/4 so happy days. She's running again on St.Stephens Day in Limerick so I'll be looking forward to that.

Well done on the horse on Sunday,will start getting back into it now a bit more with the festive season upon us and bundles of big races over the next few months.

Sad to see old Denman retire but what a career he had.He has nothing left to prove so he can enjoy his retirement and i'm sure his love life will blossom as well .Ruby to ride Kauto not surprisingly at Kempton Stephen's Day.Long Run has been installed favourite @ 6/4 i think which is way too short imo but can't wait for that race.Will give it more time before i decide what to do.Hard not to side with Kauto because of sentimental reasons though i know that is not exactly the brightest tactic when choosing a horse.

Lots of injuries for United and they really need to sign a few players in the January transfer market but i don't mind if good old Fergie is too stubborn ♦

Thanks for the encouragement. I had a tough day today unfortunately. I was down about $10 by the end of it. Played about 2500 hands. Ah well theres always tomorrow. I'm running 700bb under EV so I'm hoping my luck will change but I still have some serious improvements to make. I'm finding it tough to put opponents on ranges at this limit as you just see so many weird lines and min bets into large pots.

Do you play full ring or short handed? I'm thinking of switching to short handed maybe after Christmas. There seems to be more action at these tables and they are definitely more popular higher up the limits. I can't wait to move up to NL10 and start making some more substantial cash. Did you work your way up the limits or where did you start?

I see Long Run is 11/8 now in places. Nicky Henderson is on fire in fairness but still Kauto must be the value in the race. Having Master Minded in there is interesting too. It might be a race best watched.

Def won't be making any decisions until few days before the race anyway but you could be right about it being a race just to be watched.Sometimes nicer having the stress off and just enjoying the racing.

Presume you saw about the whole betting scandals and massive bans the flat jockeys received yesterday.Very tough but it can only be a good thing.I actually watched the 2 races where all this was about and it was pathetic.It took the jockeys 2 seconds to get the horses out of the stalls.Makes you sick.

I play NL10 BSS on Ladbrokes.Have an unusual approach to it really i suppose.I deposit an amount and then withdraw my profit after a week or two and keep doing this.Not really interested in moving up limits at the moment but will have a definite plan in the New Year.Pretty happy at that limit and am successful enough as long as i don't tilt.If i suffer 2/3 bad beats in the space of a few minutes it can set me off and i start spewing.As long as i keep my head then i usually make a nice few quid every month.

Never played SSS so can't really advise you on that but maybe worth giving it a shot and then you can decide what suits you best.You are putting in the volume so things should work out for you if you study alot and review your games and sessions.You picked a good site here anyway to help your game.

Haven't seen any of the races but ya this kind of thing really wrecks racing. I generally try to bet on big races as you never know what an owner or trainers motives are in small meetings. Ratings and things come into it then aswell.

Thats a pretty good strategy. You're obviously very comfortable at NL10. I think maybe you should look at how much profit you have made and if this plus your current bankroll is enough to move up a level maybe you should think about grinding for a couple of months and moving up or at least taking shots.

I played 2000 hands today for a profit of $22! Absolutely delighted with it. Ran about $6 over EV but I didn't get it in really bad or suck out on anyone I just won a couple of flips for stacks. I did a good bit of hand analysis today from my losing sessions yesterday. I also read and summarised half an article about playing on the turn where there was loads of examples. This really focused my mind before I started my session. I watched a bit of a comedy DVD during a break aswell it put me in a good mood. Don't know if that contributed to my winnings but anyway.

Just finished this session as you can see it went pretty great. The hand at the end I had Aces vs Kings preflop got it all in he hit a King. My Ev line caught up with me then so I guess it evened out. Still delighted with the session will post some hands from it later

Congrats Kevin,that's good going.Also good to see that you didn't tilt off any more money after the Kings sucked out on you.That's the way to do it.

Had an excellent day myself.Up 10 BIs in about 3 hours and as i had to go out i actually ended a session without losing back some of my winnings.Feel actually better over that more than anything.Money withdrawn as off to Germany for a while soon so glad we both had good days bud.

Unfortunately my second session didnt go so well. Down $11 after it. I got it in with KK against AQ and lost. Then got it in against a short stack with QQ , he had KK. Then I donked away 130BB with AKs like an eejit! He 3bet on the button for the second time in a row and I saw it as a bluff so I 4bet and he shoved and I couldnt lay it down. That KKvs AQ hand was playing on my mind I think. Anyway I quit soon enough after that. I'm still up for the day anyway.

Have to agree with Gary although I'll admit to have never visited the lovely Roscommon. I did have a P.E. teacher from the five roads though so I think I qualify.

I haven't written on this in ages so I think it's time for an update. I played very little poker over Christmas and spent most of my time in the pub or hungover. I'm back to work now and had an interview for a job that I got called back for but unfortunately didn't get. That took up a lot of my time so poker took a back seat.

When I decided to start playing again Party was offering a 100% bonus on a top up deposit so I deposited $80 and decided to take a shot at NL10. I was getting tired of NL4 and felt my game wasn't progressing at this level I was just grinding to try and get to NL10. I had some extra cash and viewed the top-up as an investment.

I took a shot at NL10 today and it went well. I played 1000 hands and was up 1 BI by the end including getting it in with bottom set against a higher set. I was very comfortable at the level so I'm excited for the future.

I got a smartphone for Christmas and uploaded my pdf versions of two poker books I have. I read these during lunch at work and whenver I have time to spare. I have to get back into reading articles and watching videos. I'm reading "The Poker blueprint" by Tri Nguyen which encouraged me to take a shot at NL10. I'm also reading "Don't Listen to Phil Hellmuth" by Dusty Schmidt which I'm finding very interesting and useful.

I wouldn't recommend moving up a limit until you have played 20k hands/ have won at least 15BI...., and once you hit 10NL, I think sticking to good BRM of 30-50BI is a good idea.

Thanks for the advice. I've played well over 20k hands profitably at NL4. Have made close to 15BI and just want to see if I can survive at NL10. I've no problem dropping down again if I lose 5 BI for NL10.

I think taking a shot at a higher limit can benefit my game as it should show up some leaks and hopefully get rid of bad habits.
