I had a dream about poker last night. I was in a big dining hall having a nice meal with a load of people I'd never met. The tables were cleared, and it turned into a poker tournament. I doubled up early, but then there was a break, and I forgot to bag up my chips. When I came back, all my chips were gone, apart from one golden chip, that was worth one million dollars. I was trying to work out what the big blind was when I woke up.
Although I had been thinking about poker, and I'm feeling motivated to play again, I'm firmly of the opinion that dreams are random brainfarts, with all the significance of the other type of fart. However, if anybody feels like psychoanalysing me on the basis of my dream, go ahead.
I'm off to teach my fourth years. I was looking at them yesterday, and I suddenly thought that, if you videoed them watching my lecture, erased the soundtrack, and replaced it with one where I'm saying 'You're going to die. I'm going to kill you slowly, and then I'm going to kill your families and all your friends.' the expression on their faces would fit perfectly and they'd all win Oscars. Fml.

Your dream text could imply you prefer the meal to the poker and you are guilty of lapses in concentration during the game. They don't seem to bother you and you are not sure you know the rules. Even if you win, you have no clue why and therefore cannot celebrate. Clearly you're on the right track.

Chess tonight. After about 15 moves my opponent went into a trance, left himself about five minutes for the next 15, and proceeded to crack off some really dodgy stuff. However, hypnotized as I was by his clock, in this position
I managed to miss 19.. Rc4, after which he can't prevent 20. a6, trapping his queen. I played the nice looking 19..Qf6 instead and managed to let him get to the time control with a worse ending after chopping off his bishop and knight on h4 and g3 for my rook. I won in the end, which meant I managed to avoid losing three in a row like Spurs. This sets up the final match of the season next month as a decider for the league against the current top team and champions. A bit like Man Utd v Man City, but with a bit less spitting, swearing and kicking.
Zooom tomorrow? That would be nice. I hope HEM1 can cope with it. I'm still waiting for those nice HEM people to fix HEM2 for me. Useless bastards.

At the basic level the dream is what is referred to as a user dream. If people have an addiction to something, and then don't fuel that addiction, they start dreaming about it. It's simply your subconscious feeding what your conscious wants.
If you give something up that is an addiction - or simply don't do enough of something you want to do - you spend a lot of time thinking about it when awake. Correct?
User dreams are just you thinking about your addictions when asleep.
The setting is interesting ... a formal dinner that becomes a poker tournament? This could be interpreted as your two worlds colliding. The dinner in a big hall is very formal and traditional within a social context - as is your job. The fact this then turns into a poker tournament perhaps indicates your desire to leave the formal and traditional world you live in and change it for the poker world.
The single golden chip represents your desires, fears and attitude to poker. The discovery of a golden chip that is worth one million dollars during a poker tournament is interesting on many levels.
Firstly, it's a tournament and not your preferred cash game where this happens. Does this mean that deep down you believe you have to get lucky to succeed?
Secondly, you don't win the chip, you get simply find it. Is this an indication of a perceived lack of control over poker?
Thirdly, the fact you are then unaware of the format/blind structure again indicates that you are not in control.
Also, you made a very basic error of not bagging up your chips at the break. This again indicates a lack of control over the game and maybe, more worryingly, a deep fear of not doing doing basic things correctly.
Drawing all this together leads me to the conclusion that you are addicted to a game you cannot control and you find this worrying - the control bit, not the addiction.

I listened to Spineshank and I rather enjoyed it. Play your riff, sing a bit, than scream your fucking head off. A winning formula. I'm afraid they don't go onto my list of bands with whom I want to form a long term relationship, but I suspect they'll be good for a no holds barred quickie every six months or so.

you are worried you can not play poker anymore, but relieved with the golden chip which gives you the chance to play again.
