Great post, brother Yeah, the way I see it, there are things which lie within our control and there are things which do not. We must concern ourselves ONLY with the thing that lie within our control and let the Universe take care of the rest for us.

Alright lads, here's my post of the week.

If I was looking for a word to describe this week, it would be SWINGY AS FUCK! My sessions were going kind of like this: +200, -300, +500, -200, +100, -300... I finished the week slightly positive though, which is definitely not bad. I think I have been kinds of scaredof playing lately and I'm not being as agressive as I used to be. But luckily I have realised that and I'll send this fear of losing away from me. I gotta focus on my plays, not on the money. The money is nothing but a consequence of what I do.

Position, position, position. The importance of it doesn't stop growing in my eyes. I feel like a fucking lion when I'm IP, but like a little kitten when OOP. I still have to find a balance between not being afraid of playing OOP and learning the right spots to give up. I found myself 3-barreling OOP once this week and as soon as I fired the last barrel I thought: "What the fuck am I doing?!". I was simply throwing money down the toilet. Luckily I realised it.

When I'm IP however, I'm learning to be corageous when my opponents show weakness. I used to always think: "he's slowplaying something" lol. But signs of weakness are 99% of the time nothing but weakness. I gotta have balls to play, that's all.

I won't make this too long, cause I gotta get going. My brother and I have a band rehearsal now. So here's the summary of the week:

So, as you can see, this has been by far the less profitable week up to now. It is of no consequence though But who knows eh? Maybe I'll hit a rocket up and get a boost this week and be in NL100 by the end of the month Oh well.. just an optimistic thought.

I managed to put in some extra volume, as I wanted to. I wanna reach at least 35k hands this month, so that I can give BJ (Big Joe) his 30k hands profit and I can withdraw a 5k hands profit. I'm really gonna need this money.

So, back to NL10. This week was both good and bad. I busted the 2nd capital in Mansion with an unbelievable streak of badbeats, lost $70 in total. Now I have $2 left, and it seems I'll lose the $80 bonus I had left.
On the other hand, my official bankroll in PokerStars did pretty well, here is the weekly graphic:

I haven't seen a good positive graphic like this for a while, it sure feels good.

A few changes :
> Play SSS at night time and weekends> more fish
> Start learning BSS
> I have received $50+$50 free in ABsolute Poker, which I will use to learn BSS in NL1/2
> No more goals of a minimum hands played per month/week. I'll not force myself to play a lot, I'll focus on playing well.

Goals :

- Get my bankroll fit for SSS NL25 again.
- Release the $50 bonus in Stars with SSS NL10
- Study Basic BSS
- Play BSS in Absolute Poker and release $50 bonus there

Do you know that feeling of joy when you see the money going to the middle with your TP/TK against bottom pairs, gutshots, middle pairs, TP/NK's. That feeling of joy that lasts for a couple of seconds and turns into utter dispair when the river card is dealt?
Or also when you spot the fish at the table. You see him literally giving away two stacks to his opp, thinking his gutshot would hit or that his underpair was good enough. And then you wait for the right spot, you hit a hand against him and you happily put your money in. You cheer for a moment, just to find out later that he had flopped a FH against your overpair?
Or when they're holding a better FD than you? Or simply when you spend the whole session whitout hitting the flop and knowing you can't c-bet, for they'll call you for SURE?

After a couple thousand hands of all this happening over and over you get into this awkward state of mind. You c-bet your OESD and get called. You hit it on the turn. You bet again and get shoved. You think "GOOD! I have the nuts! But what if.... nah, no way" You call and your opp shows his two pair completed by the same card that completed your straight. You still have the nuts and yet you shout: "NOOOOOOO!" However Fortune shouts: "YEEEEEEES!" And bang! There comes the river bringing him his FH.

I'm pretty sure you have all experienced this. And those of you who haven't experienced, don't worry, you will. Yes, it is rather unpleasant, but it's part of the game and part of life.

This is pretty much what I've been going through this week. Except for the first day of the week, when I was up by 9 and 1/2 BI. Of course that didn't last long, since I finished the week, not only losing the 9BI, but also losing everything that I made this month and a little more. My experience in cake poker has dropped to pretty much breaking even now. Good thing is, I'm not worried about it I don't feel like I'm playing bad. I think I am making good decisions. I know when it's time to stop, I know when it's time to keep on playing. In shot, I'm confident. It'll pass. It was the same on NL25, except it was a lot shorter there. I broke even for 25k hands and suddenly BOOM, I hit the sky with my winnings. I'll keep on playing and the time will come when variance will even out. Nobody ever told me poker was gonna be easy and I never expected that.

On that day I made 9BI, the first day of the week, I had an amazing good disposition and positive thinking. I sat down on the computer saying: "I'm gonna make 12BI today". Fine, I didn't reach that goal, but that day was insane. And it's just so important to maintain positive thinking and good disposition. It's the only way to keep playing your A-game. So, I have set a new goal for me. By Wednesday this week, I'll have reached 30BI for NL100 and I'll start playing it then. And that's it. Gotta keep my mind set on that. I won't be too worried about it though. I'll just keep positive thinking.

Lol I like the itch on the shoulder thing. Yeah, the psychological aspects of poker are just so important.
We just gotta keep on playing our A-game. Variance sums up to 0 in the end.

Alright, just a quick post for a summary of March. I ended the month pretty much breaking even due to the bonus, but in reality I'm down by 10BI or something.

So in the end the month ended positive due to rakeback. I'm not too worried about it though. I think I have been playing a very good game. I'm still studying and learning of course, but I'm completely confident.

As I had said in one of my previous posts, there are some things I have to pay this semester and I intend to pay them with poker winnings. So, in the end of every month, I'll post here how much my expenses amount to and how much of them I have already paid with poker money.

Hi everyone,

Tough times eh? My brother and I have been tasting bitter downswings lately. But today I'm here tom post a positive graphic, yyeeeey! Very positive actually. My bankroll has been fully regenerated and is now positive ♦ after nearly two months of -EV.
I wonder if my brother and I will ever hit an upswing together, so far whenever I'm losing, he is winning and when I'm winning, he's losing. Hang on tight brother, you'll soon make it to NL100 BSS (that's gonna be awesome).

Our database has been crashing very often here - something to do with windows vista and general software incompatibility, so I have lost the history of many sessions. Here is the graphic for the last few days:

So I have decided to abandon the study of BSS because I want to develop advanced SSS now and I'll need to focus on that.
I have 16 referrals in TAF but 0$ still, it seems none of my referral actually got the $50 yet, which I find strange.

Regarding bankroll management, I think it is time to start becoming a little more cautious, so I've decided only to start NL50 with 35 rather than 30BI. To NL100 I expect to move only with 40BI or more.
It is time now to definitely take another step with my game and improve it to Advanced SSS. That means going back to live coachings, studying articles and playing with the HUD on. It'll be fun.

I really glad that your bankroll is back on the upwards move again. I know how tough it must have been at times after going through the same big downswing myself.

I also think its a great move to start learning about and including the Advanced SSS into your game as it adds another dimension to your game.

dandycal 15/04/2009 - Oficially at NL50: Rough start

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. Let me tell you how my week has been:

Friday(10th): I reached 35 stacks for NL50, so time to move up as I had planned. I was feeling like opening NL50 tables right away an playing but I took the safer decision of making preparations for it: 1- Purchase of an NL50 database, 2- Printing the silver charts of Steals/Re-steals and of adapting to other SSSers.
Saturday(11th): Busted out of the Silver VIP tourney (Stars) in 1100th or something... no luck with these mtts so far.. But I had my first NL50 session, which was the great event of the day. I
played 4-5 tables with HUD on and my brand new database =D (thanks for the advice, Gerv!). Lots of fish, lots of calls, finished up with 3bb/100h over 500 hands. Not bad.
Sunday(12th): I watched Ingol's Intermediate coaching where he played NL400 as an Eastern special. Great coaching and I got a grand insight about BRM. Ingol said he used 100 BI BRM from NL100 on. WOW! And I thought I was being conservative to think of 40 or 45 BI. That will give me something to think about over this week. I had another 500 hands session on sunday that finished with -$3,37.. not good, but not bad either, I was still playing few tables and trying to get used to the HUD and NL50. Oh, I also started using Telescope for table selection, very useful tool.
Monday and Tuesday =( (13th and 14th) Things got a little worse and I lost 2 stacks over 700 hands on Monday. And it didn't stop there, for on Tuesday I lost another 7 stacks over 850 hands. ARGH!!! Ak loses to A2, KK loses to JJ, KK loses again to TT. AA don't get called, AA don't get called, AA don't get called.. "Will someone at least put in some dead money, please??!!!"

I thought I had lost 4 stacks at most, so when I checked the elephant in the end of my session I was surprised with nearly 7 negative BI. And I thought:"Will I ever NOT have a downswing when I move up limits? Please??" But hey, this is poker, there is variance and bla, bla, bla, I shouldn't need to repeat all this to myself, I should rather think logically:

1- Do I have any leaks? This is very possible for the following reasons:
a. New Limit - pressure, better opponents etc.
b. Starting to use stats and more advanced SSS
c. Getting used to Telescope for table selection.
d. Chatting in Skype while playing. I know, this is ridiculous, I should know better by now. Never again, from now on, when I'm playing, I'm only playing.

2- What to do now, move down to NL25 or wait a little longer?
First thing is to review my game, and this is what I'll do today. If I don't find many leaks and everything seems alright, I guess I can make a few more sessions in NL50 and see how things develop.

3- Should I become madly desperate and run naked through the streets shouting: "Why? Why?" and "I hate poker, I hate SSS!"? NO! It's been only 2K hands, let me wait until 5K at least before doing that.

What's up everybody. I must say I'm sorry, for I failed in posting last sunday.

I've been kind of unmotivated lately due to my horrible streak. Then this week, I managed to find some motivation and I saw green numbers for 3 sessions in a row =D. BUT yesterday, I ran horribly and my motivation totally vanished.

I decided to move down to NL20. Yep.. pretty sad for me. But NL50 hasn't been very kind. Everything started off well. I moved up with 30BI ($1500) and I managed to go up to something like 2.3k. But then in a few weeks time, I was thrown down to $800 - $1k. Mind you, I received $1k bonus last month. So my losses totaled actually something around $2k. That's 40BI. Absolutely sick.

I'm kind of depressed right now, but I won't let this swing take the best out of me. I'm stepping back to NL20 and I'll rebuild myself up again in no time. There's nothing to it, it's poker. That's how things work. I feel motivated now that I'm writing this post actually That's pretty good.

hey dandycal.. i really think SSS is high variance. i guess its cool for beginners to build a bankroll because its simple and easy but i really think u should start BSS. ur edge is on the postflop game where u outplay ur opponent and less gambling. u extract max value when u're ahead and lose minimum when u're behind. it should really profit more and shortstackers aren't exactly the greatest thing in poker. but whatever u set ur mind to.. just keep it up

Hey Dickbreakr, isn't every poker strategy subjected to variance? I mean, HU and MTTS/SnG's are even worse than SSS for all I know. Suggested BRM for those strategies goes from 50 to over 100 BI. Besides, isn't my brother's downswing in SH a perfect example of variance in BSS as well? We all have to cope with this.
Now, as to "shortstackers aren't exactly the greatest thing in poker", I see no reason to diss SSS like that. There are many examples of successful SSSers in our community who made their way to the high stakes. As with any other strategy it starts out with the simplest moves and concepts, then it moves on to more advanced ideas.

Now to the week's review:

So, in my previous post I told you that I had started NL50 but was already down by 9 stacks in just 2500 hands. After reviewing my game I found some leaks and also a lot of bad luck. Trully, it wasn't the start I was hoping for, but in the end I was glad it had happened because it made me realise many things I had to do in order to improve my game. I began NL50 trying to play more advanced SSS without having studied it properly. There was a lot in the Gold Articles that I still had to read and re-read and understand.

I had a chat with my brother about what was the best thing to do in my situation, should I move down to NL25 or continue NL50 with only 26 BI? It became very clear to me that I should not hurry things on, but take the safe route and grind NL25 to make up for the losses while calmly studying more advanced strategy. And since I don't really think I can practice advanced SSS in NL25, I came up with the following plan:

>>>Grind NL25 regularly until I have nearly 30 stacks for NL50. From then on I'll start making "study sessions" in NL50 - but my main sessions will still be NL25. By "study sessions" I mean sessions where my single goal will be to develop my game. The study sessions will have a tight stop-loss limit (3Bi or less), 4talbes max., and it would be great to eventually have someone sweating with me.<<<

I'll carry this plan on until I feel more confidence in my advanced strategy and rebuild my bankroll (probably with a more conservative BRM), only then will I oficially move up to NL50.

Summary of the week's sessions:

I've have been pretty positive on NL25 this week, over about 5K hands. I had a couple of small sessions on NL50 that ended slightly negative, but with less than 500 hands I shouldn't really worry.

On Saturday, which is becoming my SnGs/MTT day of the week I played the Silver VIP tourney on Stars and yey!! I got in the money! I didn't go to far though, but made $9 finishing in 860th or something. But the major event on saturday was that I finished 5th in a 1K guaranteed in Absolute Poker making $68.

Hey everybody. How's it going? My brother and I hit a mutual downswing. This one isn't about bad beats and coolers though. It's a bit different.

Last post I said I was stepping back to NL20. But before I did that I decided to take a break for some 4 or 5 days, which I did. Last Thrusday should have been my comeback day, and boy, was I eager to make some money... I get home at night and go into my brother's room (that's where the computer is) and I see him sitting on the chair reading a book. That puzzled me and I asked: "Why aren't you grinding, brother?" He looks at me with a silly smile on his face and says: "We might have some serious problems..." I go and he continues "the computer died." I go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Windows simply wouldn't start. So I had a brilliant idea: "Let us insert Windows disc so it will format the computer and reinstall windows and everything will be back to normal, hooray! \o/".

So we tried it. It was but a TRY though. The computer wouldn't recognise our HD. So the very next morning my brother took the computer to technical support and today they told us that the HD is gone and they have no idea what happened to it. It simply vanished. The compuer is new and is still in its warranty, so they're shipping us a new HD Might take up to 15 days though. Fair enough though. Shit happens.

Meanwhile, my brother and I are making some adventurous plans for our life ♦ We shall make these plans known to all of you in due time. I can tell you they'll certainly make this blog more interesting.

I'm also gonna be spending my free time with my girlfriend, with books, with my music studies and why not with some video games :rolleyes:?

Yes, of course I'll study poker during this free time. So in a couple of weeks maximum, we're back at the tables. Fortune had better welcome us back with a lot of UNLUCKY fish ♦
