How to play fast structures
Does our range change in hyper and turbo tournaments compared to regular slow structures?
I've recently had a few questions from students about how to adjust in faster-structured tournaments. In particular, do we change our ranges?
This is obviously very important at low stakes where often the formats are much faster in general.
The answer is that we play the same range we always do - but the faster the structure, the less we should pass marginal spots.
For example, this is a BB defending range at 40bbs vs an UTG open:

Don't let the blinds eat you

There are some fringe hands here like 82s and K6o that call some of the time. Weak hands like A7o and Q9s occasionally bluff. These hands are essentially break even.
It would be fine to pass marginal spots like this in a live tournament with one-hour levels, but if it's a 20-minute turbo structure then you should not be passing hands you know to be correct. The same goes for after the flop with hands that are at the bottom of your range.
In a slow structure, you can be patient and wait for better spots. When the blinds are going up fast, you may regret not taking action sooner with marginal holdings, because it is easy to blind away.
