skolsuper talks about the Aussie Millions
PokerStrategy.com: Hello James and congratulations on your 2nd place in the Aussie Millions Main Event. How do you feel after winning more than $1 million?
skolsuper: Honestly I feel pretty much the same. The money just means I can relax a lot more. I’m not going to play at a higher level than I was before - I am happy with the amount that I can make in those games and life is much less stressful now that I am comfortably bankrolled for them. So yeah winning a million dollars feels nice and all, but hopefully nothing much will change.
PokerStrategy.com: In the last hand, you had two pair against Gorr’s top pair and were 70% favoured to win. Can you tell us a bit more about it from your perspective?
skolsuper: I started heads up as a 5:1 dog in chips, but the blinds were deep so I was confident I had a good chance to play my way out of it.
I did make progress, getting back to even and then getting a bit of luck flopping 2 pair vs top pair, which gave me a 12:1 chip lead. By then we had been playing heads up for 2 or 3 hours, and this was after five 12-14 hour days prior as well, so I was pretty tired.
I expected Dave to be at least as tired as I was, but he didn’t give up, whereas I just wanted to get it over with at this point. I was a bit complacent and got my chips in bad preflop 3 times where I could’ve folded, thinking I had a chance to get it over with there and then and even if I lost then I could win the chips back the same way I had before.
However, as it turned out I could only get all the chips in as a 70% favourite and at that point my luck ran out. It was a shame but I’m happy with the money for 2nd place, and very happy with my achievement and the way I played.
I definitely don’t begrudge David the win, he played well and in a way it’s nice for a local and also amateur player to win the tournament. Maybe there will be another ‘Moneymaker Effect’ in the Southern hemisphere from this.
Furture plans for skolsuper
PokerStrategy.com: You are no stranger to the live poker circuit, so what are the upcoming tournaments on your calendar?
skolsuper: The poker calendar in Europe is really busy up until the World Series. Now that I’m playing more tournaments with Team RedKings I’m going to be in and out of airports non-stop for the next few months.
In fact right now I am in an airport on my way to play EPT Snowfest. Then in April there is the GSOP Live final in Seville, the Irish Open, EPT Berlin and EPT San Remo (I can’t remember the exact order), followed by the EPT Grand Final and a couple of £1k events near my home town in May.
Then at the end of May I am flying to Vegas for 7 weeks to play the WSOP. This will be the 3rd year I have gone for so long, but I am yet to have a decent cash.
After the WSOP I am definitely going to take a break from live poker to spend some time at home and work on my game. I think if you spend too long playing live and not grinding online where the games are tougher, you develop bad habits so I will have probably picked up plenty of those I will need to iron out.
PokerStrategy.com: You have created several videos for our PokerStrategists ranked Gold and above. What kind of videos should our members expect from you in the near future?
skolsuper: I’m not sure really. My live commentary videos were tough and didn’t really come across how I’d like, mainly because I’m very bad a multi-tasking and talking while playing.
However, I was really pleased with the theory video I did so will probably do another couple of those. The problem with that is I would prefer to find a subject that hasn’t been covered in depth already, so I will have to do some thinking about what I want to talk about.
PokerStrategy.com: Since your 2nd place finish in Melbourne is a great achievement, are you considering analyzing some key hands in a column or article?
skolsuper: Yeah I look forward to it. It’d be nice to talk about the hand where I called Sorel Mizzi down four streets all-in with a pair of 8s on a ten-high board, if only to get that brag in there.
