Daniel Negreanu wins the WSOP POY for the third time
He had a sweat on the final day but KidPoker has extended his own record in the WSOP Player of the Year honours.
Last week Daniel Negreanu was the only player to win the World Series of Poker Player of the Year title twice, this week he also became the only player to win it three times.
An early exit in the final day of the €550 Colossus for Shaun Deeb ensured victory for Negreanu, who finished the year with 4,074.88 points. Robert Cambpell of Australia was 2nd with 3,961.11 and Deeb ended with 3,917.32. Had Deeb finished 5th or better he would have leapfrogged Negreanu.

The WSOP Player of the Year title has come under scrutiny this year because the WSOPE, where it concludes, is much more re-entry heavy than the Las Vegas WSOP, so there is a perception the title can be bought. Negreanu himself has been very critical of the system and has vowed to no longer re-enter tournaments.
In addition to these changes, many agree, and it makes sense, that whatever point total you achieve in an event, divide that point total by the number of reentries.

Whatever your thoughts on the scoring system, this is a tremendous marker of consistency for Negreanu who has won this title three times through an ever-changing poker landscape. He has won the title in 2004, 2013 and now in 2019.
On his way to the title Negreanu cashed a remarkable 24 times (including three online events), making five final tables but amazingly no bracelet wins this year (this is the first time somebody has won the POY without winning a bracelet). He cashed for $2,192,518 this year at the WSOP and WSOPE. The high frequency of cashes was by design, Negreanu himself publicly said his strategy to win the Player of the Year title this year was by playing more large field, smaller buy-in, events because those favoured the current scoring system.
