High Stakes Poker is coming back

The iconic cash game show looks set to have new episodes in the works, is it precisely what the game needs right now?

There isn't much that unites the poker world but this might be it. PokerGO has acquired the assets and brand for iconic poker show High Stakes Poker and it looks like new episodes are in the works. 

The poker streaming site will begin broadcasting episodes of the show in the coming months and is working on what the future of the show could look like, including new episodes and partnerships. 

High Stakes Poker was broadcast for seven seasons between 2006 and 2011. It was the first show to popularise cash games on TV, with all the previous poker shows being tournament focussed. The buy-ins were between $100,000 and $500,000, but the show was just as memorable for the prop bets and table banter.

It featured just about every name in poker back then including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Antonio Esfandiari, Mike Matusow, Doyle Brunson, Jamie Gold, Barry Greenstein, Lex Veldhuis and many many more. It also made household names of a lot of players, perhaps most of all Tom Dwan, who was remembered for this iconic hand:

The show also broke the record for biggest cash game pot several times. This one being not the biggest but by far the most memorable:

Poker has changed a lot in the nine years High Stakes Poker has been off the air but it is perhaps precisely what the game needs. While the standard of poker has been tremendous in the GTO era that followed High Stakes Poker, there is talk that broadcast poker has become boring. What High Stakes Poker did was entertain us between hands with the sneak peak into the secret world of high rollers. If it can do that while also demonstrating how far the game has evolved, it could be a hit again.
