WCOOP Main Event rescheduled for November 5

It has now been confirmed that a DDoS attack caused the cancellation of the WCOOP Main Event, which is now set for November.

PokerStars have confirmed that last weekend's cancellation of the WCOOP Main Event was the result of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. The biggest tournament of the online year was cancelled not long after it started, with surviving players being reimbursed.

The attack was confirmed on the PokerStars Blog:

We can confirm that all our customers’ accounts are safe and their personal information secure, with no signs of any cyber breach. Our teams are working to counter the issue and look after customers whose play may have been affected.

Unfortunately, such events are a constant threat to every company operating online and we are no different. These attacks mostly go unnoticed by customers because of the investment we have made in our security systems and the layers of protection we have in place to successfully repel them.

The WCOOP Main Event set for November

The WCOOP Main Events will now take place on the weekends of November 5. PokerStars did not confirm specifically if they would take place on Sunday November 6, which suggests the events might be staggered. 

No details are known as yet if the guarantees will be the same or boosted as compensation for players affected last weekend. The $109 Low WCOOP Main Event had a $2.5 million guarantee, the $1,050 Medium WCOOP Main Event had a $4 million guarantee and the $10,300 WCOOP Championship had a $6 million guarantee. 

Southern European PokerStars customers were also impacted by the DDoS attack during the Galactic Series Main Event. That will be replaced by a Sunday Million on November 6. 

Players who were unable to complete Monthly Poker Challenges because of the technical issues are also set to be compensated accordingly.
