Can a mid stakes Triton series work?

Following the news that Triton want to expand to more affordable buy-ins, we ask if players on a budget will get the luxury experience?

My favourite poker product by far is the Tritons. I love the commentary, production, the level of play and I always get very envious of how relaxing the locations look.

So it naturally piqued my interest when I heard that there could be a Triton product for mid-stakes players.

Triton CEO Andy Wong has hinted in a press release and interview that the rest of us might be able to experience Tritons at affordable buy-ins.

I love the idea, but given the challenges poker operators have for running mid stakes poker, could it work?

What exactly is mid stakes?

The first question is, what is mid stakes in this context?

When I hear that I expect it to mean €500 to €1,000 buy-ins. However, the Tritons are populated with players who are so rich it may mean something else.

Mid stakes to a Triton regular might be €5,000 or €1,000. It could be even more,

Whatever the figure, the Tritons have recently broken a lot of field size records. They have so far risen to the challenge of more butts on seats, so it seems like they have the capacity to take on larger fields.

The bucket list series in poker?

The problems come when the fields get into the thousands. The rake in the Tritons has gone as high as $12,000. There is little wonder it looks like the experience of a lifetime.

Can we really expect the same lavish experience that the Fedors and the Iveys get in Jeju when we are cramming a thousand grinders into a hotel?

One thing I am confident of is that when an online poker room runs satellites to affordable Tritons, they will fill up. Everyone wants to play the Tritons, in many ways, they have become the bucket list event for a lot of people. I think it would make sense to tag the lower buy-in series onto the bigger festivals, much in the way that PokerStars have their Estrellas events at EPTs.

I doubt regular grinders can expect the same luxury experience that Stephen Chidwick gets in these events, but if Triton can even slightly make the customer experience more enjoyable in a lower buy-in series, it's great news for the whole industry.
