Cates bests Roumeliotis

Cates smiling after win

PokerStrategist Daniel 'junglemandan' Cates became the first All-Star Showdown winner yesterday after defeating Sweden's Alexander "Sussie Smith" Roumeliotis.

After watching Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky and Isaac "Ike" Haxton progress to the semi-finals, Cates knew he was going to have to play his A-game to overcome another tough Swede and avoid another high stakes showdown defeat.

21 months ago, Cates took on Viktor "Isildur1" Blom as part of PokerStars' heads-up challenges. Unfortunately, the result didn't go his way and he saw $51,000 disappear from his bankroll.

Things went a little differently this time though, as Cates came out on top after a nine-hour battle.

With $100,000 banked and a semi-final match against either Phil Galfond or Ben Tollerene on the horizon, Cates' route to the final certainly won't be an easy one.

GPI partners with European awards

Barry's best in show

The Global Poker Index has just announced that they will be sponsoring the 2012 European Poker Awards.

Having taken the helm at GPI just a few months ago, CEO Alex Dreyfus has been keen to make it the definitive poker ranking system in the world and partner with some well-established brands.

This latest move seems a natural fit for the GPI, who are well-placed to provide the most comprehensive insight into which players have performed well over the past year.

Helping judge the awards, including the GPI European Player of the Year prize, will be a host of industry experts such as PokerStrategy.com's barrycarter.

Commenting on the recent partnership, Alex Dreyfus said:

"We would like to create our own GPI Awards, but with the historic relationship we have with Bruno Fitoussi and the ACF, we felt it would be more pertinent to pool our efforts and make the GPI European Poker Awards Europe's the one and only such event."

Eastgate's bankroll blues

Poor Peter

He's won the Main Event, retired from poker, made a triumphant return but Peter Eastgate is still not happy.

While he might be living the life many poker players dream of, the Danish player admitted his achievements haven’t necessarily been the best thing for him.

In PokerListings' Danish podcast, Peter admitted that his bankroll-boosting win has given him a "false sense of security" - something which has caused him to become lazy.

Now living in London, Eastgate is struggling to motivate himself and implied that things might be better if he lost all his money so he was forced to do something for himself.

However, it's not all doom and gloom in Eastgate's world as he's currently practicing yoga and planning to study physiotherapy in the near future.

WPT Magazine latest

WPT Poker Magazine's November issue has just hit the shelves and features an in-depth interview with Gus Hansen about Full Tilt past and present.

The issue also looks back at their best ever covers and features the likes of Kara Scott and Tatjana Pasalic.

Ilari can't stop winning

It's been another successful high stakes run for Ilari "Ilari FIN" Sahamies in the last 24 hours as he's managed to top the leaderboard once again.

Having already banked over $2 million in the past week, Sahamies is currently up by more the $200,000 thanks to a profitable overnight session.

Also running well over the last 24 hours has been Andreas "Skjervoy" Torbergsen and Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky.

One player who hasn't fared so well is PokerStrategist Jens 'jenskyllonen' Kyllonen. The Finnish player saw $137,682 disappear from his bankroll in just 159 hands yesterday.
