Also in 2008, the WSOP exceeded all expectations. The statistics are impressive: 58,720 players came together at the tournaments, generating a combined prize pool of over $180M. In the Main Event itself were already $64,333,600 in the pot. Harrah's booked about $13M from tournament fees.

Participant Records

Already at the second event the first record was broken. With 3,929 participants, the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament was the most frequented WSOP Non-Main Event of all times. The combined number of participants of the 55 events sums up to 58,720, which is an increase of about 8% compared to the previous year. The combined prize pool with about $180M was even $21M bigger than in 2007 - an increase of over 12%. With about $13M in revenues from tournament fees, Harrah's took about 7% of the prize pool.

Main Event Record stays in Effect

The Main Event pool was quite impressive, but in 2006 it was even over $82M. Back then, 8,773 players participated in it. Jamie Gold received over $12M for his first place. This year's winner will have to be content with about $9M. The roughly $900,000 for the ninth place were already paid out to all the final table participants.

118 Nations represented

One record was literally obliterated. With an incredible 118 nations it was the most international WSOP of all times. The previous record was "only" 87 nations.
