Hellmuth sets fire to his shoes
In a bid to put an end to a recent downswing, Phil Hellmuth sets his footwear alight believing it to be “good for the soul”, with mixed results.
Following a winless run that started after he last cashed, February's Omaha win against Mike Matusow, Phil Helmuth took a rather unusual step in order to exorcise his demons and cleanse his soul in the hope of seeing a turnaround in form at the tables.
On only the second day of the WSOP, out in the Rio car park, Hellmuth performed a ritual that, according to his "spiritual guru", not to mention his parents, should be good for the soul and thus send Phil back on the winning path. The player burned his golden shoes.
And it worked too. Well, sort of. On the plus hand, his run of bad form did indeed come to an end with an immediate cash of $312,006. Sadly, this was his reward for a disappointing 10th place finish in the High Roller for One Drop where he bubbled the final table.
