Jeff Lisandro Officially Becomes WSOP's Player Of The Year 2009
Even though the final results of the WSOP Main Event are having an effect on the Player of the Year ranking for the first time, it is now made official: the best player of the year 2009 is Jeff Lisandro.
The Australian with the additional Italian passport has managed to pull off some stunts this year: he won a total of three bracelets - all of them in Seven Card Games; in addition to his title in the Razz, he also won the Stud side-event, as well as the Stud Hi/Lo World Championship of this year's WSOP.
Although the WSOP 2009 is not over just yet, no one can technically challenge his title Player of the Year, since his last and hardest competitor, the Finnish Ville Wahlbeck, dropped out on the third day of the Main Event. Therefore, he has forfeit the chance of overtaking Lisandro (picture below on the right) in the overall ranking.
After finishing in the money multiple times and winning a bracelet in event #10, the $10.000 World Championship Mixed Event, Wahlbeck was able to draw out the tension just a bit more.
Another good bet for the title was Phil Ivey, who was able to win 2 more bracelets this year.
In the end, however, no one was able to upstage the amazing performance from Jeff Lisandro this year.
That Lisandro's triumph is not a one-hit wonder is clear after a look at the leaderboard of the PotY 2007 ranking.
Back then, the Australian missed the poker throne by mere points and had to fold to the American Tom Schneider, who is currently ranked fourth in the Main Event.
