Maurice Hawkins breaks WSOPC ring record

The American becomes the first player in history to win ten rings in addition to four WSOP Circuit Main Events.

Last Monday, Maurice Hawkins smashed two poker records when he claimed his tenth WSOPC gold ring and fourth WSOPC Main Event title at the same time.

Playing at the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Hawkins took down the $1,675 Main Event for the second year running, seeing off 271 others for a $97,561 cut of the $406,500 prize pool. He now moves one ahead in the WSOPC ring leaderboard of long time leader Alex Masek, with whom he had been tying for the past two months.

Hawkins had also been tying in WSOPC Main Event titles but now moves one clear of Blair Hinkle and Chris Ferguson, currently stuck on three each.

Run of form

In April last year, the player was already in possession of four rings when he went on an impressive run of form putting together back-to-back wins of the Monster Stack Ring Event and the Main Event, again at the Horseshoe. Hawkins then went on to claim the Main Event victory at Harrah’s Cherokee a fortnight later.

In November, he won the Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event which he then followed up with the Palm Beach Kennel Club $365 No Limit Texas Hold’em Gold Ring Event in February this year.

Hawkins, whose live career earnings now stand at $2,516,492, said; "Women and men lie, numbers don’t. I don’t play for accolades. I play for money, to eat. I love accolades, but I really play to eat.”
