PokerStars EPT San Remo Main Event Starts Tomorrow

The European Poker Tour returns to San Remo, Italy, for its fourth consecutive year. Let's take a look at how the tournament has grown since 2008 and what you can expect from this year's tournament.

The Casino San Remo

Casino Sanremo welcomes players from across the globe to attend Season 9 of the European Poker Tour at Italy's seaside resort in San Remo. The full event takes place from October 3 - 11, but what we're all waiting for is the Main Event which kicks off tomorrow - October 5.

Like other Season 9 EPT stops, the San Remo Main Event has a €5,000 + €300 buy-in which is sure to receive a sizable field. Several smaller side events will also be running alongside the Main Event.

San Remo in the past

Liv Boeree secures her title at EPT San Remo in 2010

The San Remo event debuted on the EPT circuit in April of 2008 and boasted a prize pool of €3,195,860. There were a total of 701 entrants, but it was none other than the infamous Jason Mercier who came out victorious with a whopping €869,000 payday.

He made it look easy up against a final table that included online professional poker players, and Team PokerStars Pro's Dario Minieri (3rd) and William Thorson (6th).

In 2010, PokerStars pro Liv Boeree took down EPT San Remo. Not only did she win €1,250,000, she became only the third woman ever to win an EPT title.

In 2011, it was UK tournament pro and PokerStrategy.com coach RupertElder who defeated a 987-strong field to take down a prize of €930,000.

Over the years, the EPT San Remo has grown from strength to strength and is regarded as one of the favourite EPT stops. Let's take a look at EPT San Remo over the years:

This time last year...

Last year, Russian pro Andrey Pateychuk bested a field of 837 players and took home the title and €680,000. He beat Bulgaria's Dimitar Danchev in possibly one of the most exciting heads-up battles.

Danchev's   looked promising on a flop of   against Pateychuk's  . A turn left the Russian needing a miracle and Danchev within reach of the EPT trophy. But a miracle is what Pateychuk got - a on the river to leave the Russian with a massive advantage. Two hands later it was all over.

The 2012 EPT San Remo Main Event: October 5 - 11

This year we are not sure what to expect from the EPT San Remo. We're hoping for a boost in players like in previous years so we can see the prize pool in the millions - it's always more fun when there's more money involved! Who knows, maybe we'll even crown the second queen to win an EPT San Remo title.
